Date: July 18, 7:30 PM

Place: Woods Hole Public Library

Event: Talk about the War of 1812 and its Effect on New England.

James H.Ellis, retired to Cape Cod from   a management career in federal government with the Interior, Justice, Labor, and Treasury departments, with an emphasis on intergovernmental relations in New England, will speak at the Woods Hole Public Library on July   18   at 7:30 PM about his new book   “ A   Ruinous and Unhappy War:
New England and the War of 1812 ”.

Since his retirement, Mr. Ellis has turned his focus to writing. He is an active contributor to regional magazines and newspapers as well as professional journals and is involved with several historical organizations. At this presentation, which is sponsored by the Woods Hole Historical Museum, a division of the Library, he will speak about the War of 1812 and New England.

His erudite yet entertaining book documents the origins of the war and follows its course. He has combed sources near and far, bringing to life a drama that was international in scope — but so local in impact. The Woods Hole Historical Museum’s summer exhibit brings the analysis of the war even closer as it focuses on the effects on Cape Cod.

Mr. Ellis’s well-researched and documented study details naval battles and coastal incursions through diaries, regional news articles, court records, and more. His foot-notes show the breadth of his research.

Anticipating the harm another war with England would bring, New England's regional leaders opposed it from the outset. Party politics played a major role. New England was indeed hard hit by the War of 1812 with Great Britain. The war severely injured the maritime and commercial economy and inflamed the difference in interests between the Northeast and the rest of the country, where agriculture was the mainstay.

Ellis is also author of Mad Jack Percival:  Legend of the Old Navy (2002). A Ruinous and Unhappy War is his second book.
