Event: Symphony Tales for Children

Woods Hole Public Library

The Woods Hole Public Library will be hosting “Symphony Tales” at a re-scheduled date. This child-sized presentation by the New Bedford Symphony was originally scheduled for Hurricane Sandy’s day; this will be an improved time slot: eleven o’clock on Tuesday morning, December 11. It is hoped that many pre-schoolers will be able to attend to hear a story in words and in the notes of a cello.

“Symphony Tales” is making the rounds of the local libraries thanks to the Falmouth group, Mastersingers by the Sea . The Symphony’s cellist Shay Rudolph, conductor/composer David MacKenzie, and author Kimberly Marcus will appear at the Woods Hole Public Library for a performance of Scritch Scratch a Perfect Match . As this story about a dog who finds a friend to help rid him of a pesky flea is read, the cello speaks the text using musical notes and rhythms.

Following the performance, the performers involve the children in two interactive, rhythmic speaking and movement activities that draw their attention to the prosodic elements of two key text phrases from the book. At the end of the program, the children may try playing a cello that is sized just for them.

Thanks to grants received by Mastersingers, the event is offered free to the public. For more information, see the websites www.woodsholepubliclibrary.org or www.nbsmphony.org
