September 27th marks the 50th anniversary of the publication of Rachel Carson's book "Silent Spring." It's one of the great books in American history. And it was inspired, in part, by "Ray" Carson's experiences on Cape Cod and along the coast of New England and Long Island.

A statue of Rachel Carson is being planned for Woods Hole.

Today , individuals will gather at noon in Woods Hole to review plans for the statue. Rachel Carson and her work will be remembered and honored.

This event will take place at Waterfront Park, on Water Street. Everyone is invited. (If the weather becomes difficult, the event will take place indoors at MBL.)

Why is Rachel Carson important to Woods Hole?

She studied at the MBL and she began her career in Woods Hole. "Ray" Carson was one of the first women in America to develop a career in the marine sciences. As a writer, she became very popular and influential. "Time" magazine listed her as one of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century......It's appropriate for Woods Hole to honor Rachel Carson.
