The next Travel Talk at the Woods Hole Public Library will be held on Wednesday, March 6 at 7:30 PM. Speaker Rob Goldsborough and his wife Salley Mavor had the opportunity to travel along the Antarctic Peninsula this past December, during the height of the austral summer. 





Traveling with their friends Bonnie and Stephen Simon, they joined the ship Le Boral which took them from the southern tip of Argentina, across the Drake Passage south to Antarctica. First they visited the east side of the peninsula and then along the breathtaking west side. Their travels through the many small islands and coves offered spectacular views of the rugged glacier covered mountains, multitudes of icebergs, sea ice and ever-present birds. Along the way they encountered pods of feeding whales, multitudes of penguins and a variety of seals. As the ship progressed along the edge of the continent, it stopped twice each day so that the passengers could be ferried ashore by zodiac. They could explore the territory up close and one time actually sat right next to a penguin rookery to see these curious birds first hand. Sometimes they could climb along the near ridges for unforgettable vistas. 





This presentation will include photographs and videos of the wildlife and the amazing scenery found along the incredibly beautiful and photogenic Antarctic Peninsula. The talk is dedicated to Stephen Simon, the speakers’ very good friend and the inspiration for this adventure, and who died suddenly in January.
