Top Singer-Songwriter Joe Jencks Closes Folk Music Society’s 46th Season

The 46th season of the Woods Hole Folk Music Society will conclude on April 8 with a performance by singer and songwriter Joe Jencks. The concert will take place at 7:30 PM in Community Hall, 68 Water Street, Woods Hole. Doors open at 7:00 PM. Admission is $20 with discounts for members, seniors and youth. Community Hall is handicapped accessible and street parking is free after 6:00 PM.

Award winning singer-songwriter Joe Jencks blends Celtic folk with American blues, pop and jazz in his performances. Classic and original songs of social consciousness and spirituality are delivered in a lyrical tenor voice. Transparently spare string accompaniment, as SingOut! magazine says, “doesn’t obscure the beauty of Jencks’ voice or the words of his well-written songs ... his songs have poetry and heart.”

Joe Jencks was raised in Rockford, Illinois in a large and musical Irish family. At age 7 his sister bought him a Pete Seeger album, which hooked him on folk music. Early jobs, including bus driver and forklift operator, helped to shape his understanding of the struggles of everyday people while profoundly influencing his songwriting and performing.

Mr. Jencks received degrees in vocal music performance, music education and choral conducting at Milliken University’s Music Conservatory in Decatur, Ill. He has spent the last 18 years touring full-time, including internationally. Currently based in Chicago, he has performed at venues ranging from coffee houses, schools and festivals to New York’s Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center.

Mr. Jencks has produced 8 albums to date. His 2017 release, “Poets, Philosophers, Workers, & Wanderers,” was dedicated to his mentor Pete Seeger and featured guest artists from Reggie Harris to Ysaye Barnwell of Sweet Honey in the Rock. Several songs reached #1 on the Folk DJ charts, and the album topped Sirius XM's Americana Chart with 4 songs in the top 10. His newest album, The Forgotten: Treasures from the Pen of Si Kahn, features unreleased compositions by Mr. Kahn, a fellow singer-songwriter and civil rights activist.

In addition to solo performing, Mr. Jencks is also highly sought after as a vocal harmony arranger. He has appeared as a guest singer and arranger on over 30 studio recordings. Mr. Jencks is also co-founder of the group Brother Sun, an award winning contemporary vocal trio.

Onstage, Joe Jencks blends the intensity of a gospel choir with the emotion of an Irish tenor, and encourages audiences to join in rousing choruses. With expertly crafted originals and vivid songwriting, Joe Jencks delivers potent messages about spirituality, social struggles and essential humanity. He also incorporates a dose of humor, with songs such as "Auto Mechanically Declined,” a classic on NPR's legendary "Car Talk" show. As Rich Warren of WFMT Chicago says, “Joe Jencks’ captivating tenor voice, lofted by flawless production, demonstrates music of conscience and provides a feast for the ear as well as nourishment for the soul.”

This will be the final concert in the Woods Hole Folk Music Society’s 46th season. Doors open at 7pm for the 7:30 concert. Admission is $20, with discounts for members, seniors, youth and children. Community Hall is handicapped accessible, and street parking is free after 6pm.
