Singer-Songwriter Sarah McQuaid in Woods Hole October 26

The 47th and final season of the Woods Hole Folk Music Society will continue on Sunday, October 23 with a concert by singer-songwriter and guitarist Sarah McQuaid. This will be one of thirty-seven US shows on her three-month international tour. Known for her adventurous compositions, powerful singing and complex guitar accompaniments, Ms. McQuaid was last in Woods Hole in October, 2016. The concert will take place at 7:30 PM in Community Hall, 68 Water Street, Woods Hole. Doors open at 7 PM. Admission is $20 with discounts for members, seniors, youth and children; season passes are also available. Community Hall is handicapped accessible, and street parking is free after 6 PM.

Sarah McQuaid, who was born in Spain, raised in Chicago and now lives in rural England, was taught piano and guitar by her folksinging mother. She remembers being inspired by her distant cousin, well-known singer/songwriter and storyteller Gamble Rogers, while visiting her grandmother in Indiana. Ms. McQuaid moved to Ireland in 1994 and lived there for 13 years, working as a music journalist and magazine editor. She released her debut solo album, When Two Lovers Meet, in 1997, launching her solo career soon after with a critically acclaimed performance on Irish national television.

In 2007 Ms. McQuaid moved to England, and in 2008 she released her second album, I Won’t Go Home ’Til Morning. In contrast to the first album’s Irish focus, the second was a celebration of old-time Appalachian music, including original compositions and a cover of Bobbie Gentry’s classic “Ode to Billie Joe.” The two albums were re-released as a double set in 2010, rising immediately to the top of Folk-DJ charts.

Sarah McQuaid’s third album, The Plum Tree And The Rose, introduced further contrasts, featuring original songs along with medieval and Elizabethan music. In creating her 4th album McQuaid travelled from her home in Cornwall, England, to Cornwall, New York. The result, Walking Into White, was selected by FolkWords reviewers as Album of the Month and nominated for Best Album from a Female Artist as well as Album of the Year.

In April 2017, Ms. McQuaid was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Ards International Guitar Festival in Northern Ireland, in recognition of her innovative use of the DADGAD tuning and her authorship of The Irish DADGAD Guitar Book. She regularly presents workshops on DADGAD tuning and songwriting at festivals, music schools and other venues around the world, and is now writing a second book on DADGAD accompaniment.

With the 2018 release of her fifth recording, If We Dig Any Deeper It Could Get Dangerous, McQuaid expanded her instrumental array to piano, electric guitar and drum. Produced by guitar legend Michael Chapman, the album has been hailed as a “consummate artistic triumph” by Folk Radio UK, and has garnered nominations for Folk Album of the Year by magazines and blogs in the USA, UK, Netherlands and Spain. “The precision and sophistication of the writing and playing blows me away. I am so glad to be involved,” writes Michael Chapman in his introduction to the album.

Sarah McQuaid has drawn wide critical praise for the richness of her vocals and for her engaging rapport with audiences. As an artist she defies pigeonholing, moving easily between traditions and times, from 16th century lute songs to historic Cuban jazz, from Irish and Appalachian ballads to contemporary pop, R&B and original songs. Reviewer Gillian Adams calls her "a captivating performer with a gorgeous voice, a superb collection of albums and a truly adventurous musical nature.”

Upcoming WHFMS performances include: November 4, Kevin Burke; November 18, John McCutcheon; January 13, Guy Davis; January 27, 2019, The Reunion Band; February 10, Troy MacGillivray & Andrea Beaton; February 24, Lissa Schneckenburger & Bethany Waickman; March 10, Joel Mabus; March 24, William Jackson; and April 7, Bill Staines.
