AmeriCorps Seniors – Winter Education Series 2023

All 2023 Winter Education Series events will be held online so the community can still participate in a safe environment.

Winter Education Series – March 2023 Presentations:





  *   Clam Shrimp: a surprising piece of our natural heritage
  *   Speaker: Nicole Madden (Training Lands Field Specialist - Natural Resources & Integrated Training Area /Management MAARNG Natural Resources Office at Camp Edwards, MA)



Once listed as endangered, the Agassiz’s Clam Shrimp was re-found in a storm water basin wetland on the Camp Edwards Training Site in 2015 where it had been previously documented in 1999. After that, a concerted effort by the Massachusetts Army National Guard’s Natural Resources Program focused on documenting and protecting the species. Also, a long-term conservation plan was developed along with a variety of conservation tools to protect and preserve these unique pieces of Cape Cod’s natural heritage and history. Hopefully, greater public awareness will lead to the discovery of more clam shrimp locations throughout the region.

  *   Bird Population Trends Reflect Pine Barrens Conservation at Camp Edwards
  *   Speaker: Jake McCumber (Natural Resources & Training Lands Manager - Massachusetts Army National Guard)

 A ten-year annual breeding bird survey dataset, from Massachusetts Army National Guard’s Natural Resources Program, comparing trends of the past decade to the prior 20 years. The presentation will highlight effective conservation efforts, active habitat restoration and stewardship, and long-term ecosystem health and resilience. It will also focus on the following bird species: Brown Thrashers and Prairie Warblers, Scarlet Tanager, Black-and-white Warbler, among others.
