ʺWe All Shall Be Changedʺ

featuring Brahmsʹ extraordinary masterpiece Ein deutsches Requiem

The Falmouth Chorale will celebrate a cornerstone of the choral repertoire by performing Johannes Brahmsʹ Ein deutsches Requiem (ʺA German Requiemʺ) on Saturday, March 18,  4:00 PM and Sunday, March 19, 3:00 PM, at Simon Center for the Arts, Falmouth Academy, 7 Highfield Drive, Falmouth.

Under the direction of Andrew Jonathan Welch, the concert features the Chorale, Carley DeFranco, soprano, and Richard Giarusso, baritone, and a chamber orchestra. The Brahms Requiem is universally recognized as a masterpiece, and its rich choral texture has made it a favorite for choir performances.

Yet, Brahmsʹ Requiem differs from other great Requiems in several ways:

  *   Most are based on the traditional Latin Roman Catholic Requiem Mass. Brahms chose text from both the Old and New Testaments of the German Luther Protestant Bible.
  *   This change in text allowed him to focus on comforting those who mourn, rather than on prayers for the dead. Brahms told a colleague that he would have liked to call the work Ein menschliches Requiem (ʺA human Requiemʺ).
  *   Unlike other 19th Century oratorios which use soloists extensively, Brahms placed the choir, the voice of the community, in the center of his humanistic and interdenominational treatment of death.

The title of the concert, ʺWe All Shall Be Changed,ʺ according to Andrew Welch, ʺis from a common English translation of part of the text from the sixth movement of the Brahms Requiem.  It also refers to the powerful experience we hope to offer to both singers and listeners as they perform and experience the work, some of them for the very first time.ʺ

  *   Falmouth Chorale Artistic Director Andrew Welch will offer a free public lecture about Brahms and his Requiem on Sunday, March 12, 2:00 PM at John Wesley United Methodist Church, 270 Gifford Street, Falmouth. The presentation will include an introduction to the piece and a discussion.
  *   Andrew was interviewed by Mindy Todd of WCAI (90.1 FM) about the Falmouth Chorale and Brahmʹs Requiem. The interview will be broadcast on The Point on Wednesday, March 8, from 9:00-9:20 AM, and again from 7:00-7:20 PM.

Tickets for adults are $25 in advance, $30 at the door, and $5 for students. Masks are recommended. All Chorale members and guest performers have been vaccinated and rehearsing masked, and there will be a spatial separation between singers and the audience.
