Celebrate the Start of Falmouth Chorale’s

60th Anniversary Season!

The Falmouth Chorale will celebrate the start of its 60th season with “Is Not His Word Like a Fire,” performing concerts on Saturday, October 21 and Sunday, October 22, 2023, at 3:00 PM on both days, at the First Congregational Church, Main Street, Falmouth. Artistic Director Andrew Jonathan Welch’s program is a captivating blend of works, drawing on both tradition and innovation, including:

The Cry of Jeremiah is composed by Rosephanye Powell, hailed as one of America’s premier contemporary composers of choral and solo vocal music. This work is inspired by American spirituals, gospel music, and jazz, with the chorus echoing words from the Book of Jeremiah, first spoken by a narrator. This will be the first time the Chorale performs a full-length choral work by a female composer.

Five Mystical Songs by Ralph Vaughan Williams. The work sets five exquisite texts by the metaphysical poet George Herbert from his 1633 collection, The Temple. The baritone soloist and choir interact as a principal character and a chorus in a traditional play, with the chorus expanding or coloring the text the soloist delivers. This cycle is one of Artistic Director Welch’s very favorite works for choir and orchestra.

“I know my soul has power,” a shorter work that forms a bridge between the Powell and Vaughan Williams, was composed by C. Hubert Parry and set to a John Davies poem. The frustration and struggle present in the lamentations of Jeremiah is echoed here. It also reflects on the shortcomings of an individual and of mankind which flows perfectly into Five Mystical Songs.

The messages of these works reveal feelings of unworthiness and despair juxtaposed with grace and redemption, expressed by narrators. In Powell’s work, popular Cape Cod NPR host Mindy Todd will speak the narration. In the Vaughan Williams, baritone soloist Richard Giarusso narrates. In Parry’s song, the chorus itself expresses these emotions. Chorus, soloist, and narrator will be joined by a string quartet, percussionist, and pianist
