In theory it is the business of communicating scientific subjects in graphics to a broad public. In practice it also includes educating scientists about the public, the possibilities and limits of computers, and much more. In many cases the artist is the advocate for the interests of the ultimate audience. It helps to have a large wardrobe of hats. Steve was a concert pianist, trained at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, before becoming an illustrator. He currently works exclusively with digital media but has a unique painterly style- utilizing the computer as another painting tool. He has range of clients from the New York Times and Scientific American to the US Forest Service and US Postal Service. Steve lives in Connecticut and is a member of the New England Chapter as well as the National Guild of Natural Science Illustrators. His work is on display as part of the ‘Darwin to Digital’ Exhibit at Highfield Hall. Works from Woods Hole illustrator Julia Child's Biological Illustration students are on view in the Ter Heun room.
