Optical Communications underwater -- submarine use"

Dr. Enid Sichel will speak about a deep sea communication instrument at the Woods Hole Public Library on Monday evening March 1 at 7:30 PM. She helped invent this tool for deep sea research as part of a Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution design team which has, over the course of ten years, developed two underwater optical communication systems for use with seafloor sensors in an ocean observatory and other projects. Dr. Sichel, a physicist specializing in optics, will describe a WHOI expedition to deploy and test the instruments on the ocean floor in the North Pacific from the research vessel Atlantis.

The public is invited to come hear about the actual testing of research instruments, with all its excitement and frustration. Dr, Sichel will give a power-point demonstration of the expedition, presenting it as a journal of the day-to-day progress.

The talk is free; the building is handicapped accessible.
