<div>Severe weather, wildfires, and other climate change impacts can directly affect mental health. Climate anxiety involves distress attributable to worry and uncertainty about the future. According to a survey by the American Psychology Association, a majority
of Americans experience some climate anxiety—including grief, guilt, and anger—that can affect mood, behavior, and thinking and lead to depression, substance use disorders, and other adverse impacts. Children and young adults are particularly vulnerable. </div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div><b>On March 18th, Dr. McKowen will focus on the climate crisis from a mental health perspective, highlighting both the profound effects on youth and the broader impacts of climate anxiety and eco-anxiety on the well-being of individuals of all ages. In
addition, he will discuss evidence-based behavioral strategies for building resilience and establishing connections with nature. </b></div>

<div>James McKowen, Ph.D., is a clinical child psychologist and assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), as well as the clinical director of MGH’s Addiction Recovery Management Service. In addition,
he is trained in climate-aware therapy, conducts research on climate change impacts on vulnerable populations, runs community-facing climate cafés, and works with organizations to build effective behavioral strategies for improving sustainability. He is co-chair
of the MGH Climate and Mental Health Initiative; affiliate faculty at the Center for Climate, Health, and the Global Environment at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health; associate at the MGH Center for Environment and Health; and member of the Climate
Psychology Alliance – Youth Subcommittee. </div>
