Event: Talk: Research Diving, Maggie and Terry Rioux Place: Woods Hole Public Library Date/Time: Saturday July 18 at 3 PM Free!
Title: Into the Sea for Science: Scientific Diving at WHOI Maggie and Terry Rioux, divers by both vocation and avocation, who live in Hatchville, will speak at the Woods Hole Public Library on Saturday July 18 at 3 PM. Their presentation will look at the unique world of scientific diving as practiced at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Despite many similarities, research diving is not the same as either recreational or commercial diving. WHOI was one of the first research institutions to use diving, beginning in 1952. The Rioux’s will look at the history of the program, how divers are trained and certified, and the way diving gets used in scientific research at WHOI. Terry Rioux has been Diving Safety Officer at WHOI since 1980, and is a frequent speaker at Boston Sea Rovers, an active dive group from the Boston area. Maggie Rioux has been a WHOI diver since 1985 and is also Systems Librarian of the MBLWHOI Library. She also is a past president of the Woods Hole Public Library. In previous presentations at the Library, the many-talented couple have shown slides of diving vacations in Little Cayman Island, as well as teaching craft programs, most notably, advanced origami classes.
The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call the Library at 508-548-8961 or check out the website at woodsholepubliclibrary.org
