Event: Talk about the Coalition for Buzzards Bay

Date: Wed., Aug 12, 7:30 PM

Place: Woods Hole Public Library

Mark Rasmussen, president of the Coalition for Buzzard Bay, will speak at the Woods Hole Public Library in a free program open to the public on Wednesday evening, August 12 at 7:30 PM. The Coalition for Buzzards Bay is a private, non-profit membership organization dedicated to the restoration, protection and sustainable use and enjoyment of Buzzards Bay and its watershed. The organization works to improve the health of the Bay ecosystem for all through education, conservation, research and advocacy The Coalition has recently opened a second office in Woods Hole, bringing their presence to this side of the Bay while still maintaining their main office in New Bedford,. Mr. Rasmussen will discuss the state of the Bay, what is already happening to reverse its decline and, most importantly, what still needs to be done to safeguard the future of one of our region's most valuable natural and economic assets. If current trends continue, Buzzards Bay may lose its distinction as one of the healthiest estuaries on the Eastern Seaboard. The culprit is expanding nitrogen pollution from residential wastewater and poorly-planned sprawl development throughout its 432 square mile watershed.

Mark has been President and Chief Executive Officer of The Coalition for Buzzards Bay since 1998. Prior to joining the Coalition, Mark worked as a Guest Student at the Woods Hole Oceanographic

Institution where he assisted in the collection and analysis of data aimed at assessing on the impacts of nutrient loading to coastal ecosystems and as a Regional Planner for the Massachusetts Office

of Coastal Zone Management’s Buzzards Bay National Estuary Program. He is the Founder and Past President of the nonprofit Fairhaven-Acushnet Land Preservation Trust and a former elected member

of the Fairhaven Planning Board. He is a graduate of Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government with a Masters in Public Administration and received his Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Environmental Studies at Boston College.

His talk will further the group’s mission of educating the public about the ecosystem of Buzzards Bay and explain ways to protect it. He will also tell of the organization’s efforts to preserve land on the shores and watersheds of the Bay. The Coalition has an active year-round water-quality monitoring program, sampling at 30 sites all around the Bay, including several in Falmouth. Founded in 1987, the group now has a membership of 5,500 and is actively seeking new members so has become an important force in efforts to save the Bay.
