SMALL PRESS RELEASE
We're pleased to welcome the return of this versatile duo. Cindy is a highly respected singer, songwriter and guitarist with a compellingly clear, powerful alto voice and long connections to Martha's Vineyard. Grey is a singer and multi-instrumentalist, widely recognized as one of America's finest players of Irish flute. Their repertoire features Cindy's inspiring original songs, traditional Irish, old-time and Scandinavian fiddle tunes, and more. The music is deeply rooted in tradition, interwoven with the renaissance and baroque music in which both were immersed while growing up. But they also have a humorous side, as evidenced by their latest single, "Back When We Were All Machines." Cindy and Grey blend their voices with crisp melodic guitar accompaniment, fiddle, flute, whistle, concertina, and harmonium, adding stories and anecdotes that put the music into a personal context. The result, as one reviewer said, "leaves an audience walking away smiling, uplifted, and humming a tune."

FULL PRESS RELEASE
Cindy Kallet and Grey Larsen
The 39th season of the Woods Hole Folk Music Society will continue January 2, 2011 with a performance by Cindy Kallet and Grey Larsen. The concert takes place at 7:30 PM in Community Hall, 68 Water Street in Woods Hole.
Well known solo artists Cindy Kallet and Grey Larsen have spent the last five years in musical collaboration. Cindy Kallet is acclaimed as one of America's top singers and songwriters in the folk idiom, with her clear and powerful alto voice accompanied by rhythmic fingerstyle guitar. Her evocative and poetic original compositions include classics such as "Shores of Africa" and "If You Say Yes."
Ms. Kallet has performed in concert throughout the country and has appeared on A Prairie Home Companion, WFMT's Folkstage, and National Public Radio's Weekend All Things Considered. Her album Working on Wings to Fly was voted one of the "Top 100 Folk Albums of the Century" by WUMB, and her family oriented recording "Leave the Cake in the Mailbox" was chosen for a 2004 Parents' Choice Gold Award.
Grey Larsen has long been known for his mastery of Irish flute in the melodic East Galway style; fiddler Séamus Connolly says he is "one of the few players who has mastered [the] older style of playing … It is refreshing and gratifying to hear such true understanding in an American-born musician."
Mr. Larsen also sings and plays tin whistle, concertina, old-time fiddle, piano and harmonium, combining his decades of traditional training with an academic background in composition and early music. He has also explored the old-time fiddle music of his native southern Midwest, and in particular the "crooked-tune" repertoire of southern Indiana fiddler Joe Dawson.
Longtime collaborations with Malcolm Dalglish and Pete Sutherland, as well as Andre Marchand of La Bottine Souriant, have led Grey Larsen to incorporate a number of diverse influences into his own unique playing style. Several of his original tunes have been adopted into the common repertoire of Irish traditional music, and he has many albums and several educational music books to his credit.
In 2007, Cindy Kallet and Grey Larsen released their widely praised first duo recording, Cross the Water. Their combined repertoire includes contemporary originals, distinctive settings of traditional Irish music, Scandinavian fiddle duets, old-time fiddle and guitar tunes from southern Indiana, and new and spontaneously improvised music. Their music is deeply rooted in folk traditions, but also influenced by the renaissance and baroque music in which both were immersed while growing up. The duo also has a humorous side, well shown in their latest single, "Back When We Were All Machines," and performances always include a variety of stories that put the music into a personal context.
Scott Alarik of The Boston Globe calls Cindy Kallet "...one of folk music's most respected songwriters... provocative, heartwise, and original ... [and] a brilliant guitarist." Mike Joyce of the Washington Post calls Grey Larsen "... a gifted multi-instrumentalist who consistently demonstrates his melodic finesse," while The New Mexico Daily describes his playing as "spellbinding". Together, says reviewer Nan Collie, "their writing, arranging, and exceptional instrumental talents combine with a genuine warmth and charm that leaves an audience walking away smiling, uplifted, and humming a tune."
The concert begins at 7:30 PM. Doors open at 7 PM. Admission is $15 with discounts for members, seniors, youth and children. Community Hall is handicapped accessible. There is no charge for street parking after 6 PM.
