Legendary Scottish Singer Archie Fisher in Woods Hole

Falmouth, MA - February 1 , 2010 - The Woods Hole Folk Music Society continues its 38th concert series on Sunday, February 14 with a performance by Scottish singer and songwriter Archie Fisher. The concert takes place at 7:30 PM in the Community Hall at 68 Water Street in Woods Hole.

Singer, songwriter and guitarist Archie Fisher is known as Scotland's foremost troubadour. His deep and gentle baritone, creative compositions and intricate guitar fingerpicking have earned him a place in the Scots Traditional Music Hall of Fame. In 2007 he was awarded the prestigious MBE (Member of the British Empire) medal by Queen Elizabeth for his services to traditional music.

Mr. Fisher was born in Glasgow, Scotland into a large and musically varied family . T he entire family performed and recorded together for a time, and his sisters Ray and Cilla also became career singers. Parental influences included vaudeville, opera, "skiffle," and ancient Gaelic traditions from the Hebridean Islands. The recordings of the Weavers also had a profound effect on his approach to music and his political outlook.

Based in Edinburgh during the British folk boom of the 1960s and '70s, Mr. Fisher became a fixture on the BBC TV show Hootenanny with his sister Ray as well as with Robin Williamson of the Incredible String Band and guitarist Bert Jansch of Pentangle . H e also wrote original compositions for BBC documentaries. He toured and recorded with the Tommy Makem and Liam Clancy duo, while producing numerous solo albums and engineering studio recordings for new bands such as Silly Wizard.

In the 1980s Mr. Fisher began producing the BBC Scotland radio show Traveling Folk, which he still hosts today. He directed the Edinburgh Folk Festival and returned to the recording studio for what he describes as one of his most creative songwriting periods. A partnership with Canadian songwriter Garnet Rogers led to a series of highly acclaimed tours, as well as several albums produced by Mr. Rogers , including Sunsets I've Galloped Into. Following the success of that release, Archie toured throughout North America, playing with John Renbourn and Bert Jansch. His latest album, Windward Away, was released in 2008 and has achieved widespread acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic.

As Sing Out magazine says: "Archie Fisher is more than a singer, accomplished accompanist and songwriter - he is one of Britain's finest song interpreters."

The concert begins at 7:30 PM. Doors open at 7 PM. Admission is $15 with discounts for members, seniors, youth and children. Community Hall is handicapped accessible. There is no charge for street parking after 6 PM.
