World Expert speaks on The Role of Responsible Aquaculture: Feeding the World in the 21 st Century

Ron Zweig of Woods Hole will speak about the present state of aquaculture world-wide in a lecture at the Woods Hole Public Library, 581 Woods Hole Road, on Wednesday evening, February 17 at 7:30 PM.

Dr. Zweig first came to Falmouth to lead the aquaculture program at the New Alchemy Institute from 1975-1985, then worked as a consultant for a number of UN and US agencies and most recently served as Senior Aquaculturist for The World Bank (1992-2007). This evening’s presentation is largely derived from the keynote address that he presented last September at the World Aquaculture Society’s Symposium in Veracruz, Mexico.

Aquaculture continues to be one of the fastest growing sectors worldwide. Aquaculture now represents more than 47% of the aquatic produce globally – over 50 million tons consumed including fish, shellfish, and algae -- having increased by between 5-8% per year for the past three decades. Nearly 9 million jobs have been created in aquaculture -- up about 75% since 1990.

The expansion in production has not gone without significant environmental and social problems. Many of these challenges are being effectively addressed while others remain as potentially serious threats.

East, Southeast and South Asia are the regions where a majority of the production has been achieved with China the world leader, yielding about 67% of aquaculture produced worldwide each year. Other countries have made significant advances such as Norway, which is the global leader in the advancement of salmon culture. Many lessons are available from traditional and advanced practices for application in other countries, including the USA.
