SMALL PRESS RELEASE
Jim Kweskin and Geoff Muldaur are back at it, playing gigs and bringing knowing smiles to the faces of their fans. As founding members of the 1960s Cambridge-based Jim Kweskin & the Jug Band, they helped to create a new style in American musical culture. The band's energetic mix of ragtime, blues and hometown country music had far-reaching influence on the musical landscape and top players from Jerry Garcia to John Sebastian. Two of the band's most distinctive features were Jim Kweskin's clean, rhythmic finger picking and Geoff Muldaur's emotional, quavering voice. Jim and Geoff were brought back together in 2006 and have been performing together ever since. Jim has honed his dazzling picking skills, developing new arrangements of American folk and jazz material to accompany his joyous singing style. Geoff returned to full-time performing in the late nineties with his much-heralded album, The Secret Handshake, and has since traveled the world, playing his guitar and singing his heart out.
The concert begins at 7:30 PM. Doors open at 7 PM. Admission is $15, with discounts for members, seniors, youth and children; further discounts are available with season tickets. Community Hall is handicapped accessible. There is no charge for street parking after 6 PM.
The Woods Hole Folk Music Society is a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering enjoyment of folk music in all its forms. Concerts are generally held on the first and third Sunday of each month from October to May. They are made possible by support from its members, season subscribers, volunteers, and performers. FULL PRESS RELEASE
Blues in the Jug Band Tradition with Jim Kweskin and Geoff Muldaur
The 39 th season of the Woods Hole Folk Music Society will continue November 7 with a concert by Jim Kweskin and Geoff Muldaur of 60s jug band fame. The concert takes place at 7:30 PM in Community Hall, 68 Water Street in Woods Hole.
Jim Kweskin and Geoff Muldaur are pioneers in the acoustic folk, blues, and modern ragtime traditions in American music. As founding members of the 1960s Cambridge-based Jim Kweskin & the Jug Band, they helped to create a new style in American musical culture. Inspired by traditional African-American jug band and skiffle music, the group's energetic mix of ragtime, blues and hometown country styles had far-reaching influence on the American musical landscape and top artists from Jerry Garcia to John Sebastian. In addition to the sounds of jug and washtub bass, Jim Kweskin's rhythmic finger picking and Geoff Muldaur's emotional, trembling vocals were hallmarks of the band.
The Kweskin jug band was a smash hit from its first performance and soon embarked on an intensive 5-year touring and recording spree, appearing on national television and winning the hearts of music lovers around the country. The group disbanded in 1968, but is still well remembered today for its uniquely earthy and good-humored blend of American roots music.
Jim Kweskin and Geoff Muldaur eventually embarked on long and successful careers of their own. Mr. Kweskin turned towards jazz and country influences, honing his guitar picking skills to a razor's edge and developing new arrangements of American folk and jazz material to accompany his joyous singing style. He has also revisited his roots with several jug band albums, featuring guest singer Samoa Wilson. Geoff Muldaur maintained his focus on classic Memphis blues, adding original compositions and performing numerous times for the Woods Hole Folk Music Society over the years. His acclaimed solo album The Secret Handshake appeared in the 1999, followed by other albums including old-time string band music featuring his newest group, the Texas Sheiks. Mr. Muldaur has continued to tour widely, accompanying his trademark quavering vocals with solid blues and bottleneck guitar.
The two performers were brought back together in 2006 at the memorial of original jug band member Fritz Richmond; a deep musical chemistry was instantly reignited, and they have been playing together ever since. As one reviewer noted, " To this day, no one plays guitar like Jim Kweskin and no one sings like Geoff Muldaur. They are singular artists."
The concert begins at 7:30 PM. Doors open at 7 PM. Admission is $15 with discounts for members, seniors, youth and children; further discounts are available with season tickets. Community Hall is handicapped accessible. There is no charge for street parking after 6 PM.
Upcoming performers include:
Nov 21: The Sky Blue Boys, old-time "brother duo"; Jan 16: Claudia Schmidt & Sally Rogers, folk, jazz & children's songs; Jan 30: New England Cowboy Bill Staines; Mar 6: Lee Murdock, songs of the Great Lakes; Mar 20: Tim Eriksen, ancient ballads and gospel; Apr 3: Canadian singer-songwriter James Keelaghan.
