August 3 

Sharks: Movements and Migrations in the Western North Atlantic 

Dr. Bradley M. Wetherbee, Department of Biological Sciences, University of Rhode Island 

Tracking sharks with satellite transmitters has revealed seasonal movements of blue, mako, tiger, and sand tiger sharks in and out of Massachusetts waters. Follow these journeys, which have taken the sharks throughout Western Atlantic, into bays, along the coast, around islands, and into the open ocean, along pathways that span thousands of miles and many months - and learn about the shark’s ability to cover impressive distances and navigate very effectively. 



August 10 

Piping Plovers 

Kathy Parsons, Director of the Coastal Waterbird Program at Mass Audubon 

Piping plovers migrate to and nest on Cape Cod beaches each summer. Learn more about the courtship displays and nesting rituals, find out what banding plovers in the Bahamas has taught us about migration ecology, and discover how our local research efforts contribute to the recovery of the piping plover population. 



August 17 

Leatherback Sea Turtles 

Connie Merigo, Director of Marine Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation at the New England Aquarium 

Explore the unique natural abilities of the world’s largest living turtle, the leatherback sea turtle. Learn about the insights we have gained into their distinctive behavior and anatomy through years of research in Cape Cod Bay, Nantucket Sound and the northwest Atlantic Ocean.
