The Solstice Singers will celebrate their 20 th anniversary this week with Renaissance style holiday festivities including music, drama and dance. The performances on Dec. 21 and 22 will feature the Solstice Singers’ children’s chorus Les Enfants du Soleil, along with the renowned early music instrumental ensemble Passacaglia, and Vineyard Swordfish, a dynamic English sword dance team based in Woods Hole. The program includes such favorites as the Boar’s Head Carol, Lord of the Dance and Coventry Carol, and other selections reflecting the reverence and revelry of the season. Both performances will be held in the historic Woods Hole Community Hall in Woods Hole.

The Solstice Singers were formed in1992 under the guidance of the late Patricia Brown, and have been directed by Lore Loftfield DeBower of Woods Hole since 2000. The group’s primary missions are self-enrichment and community enrichment through sharing music and tradition of earlier times. More than half of the adult members have been with the group since its inception, and several former Solstice Singers members will be returning to join in as part of the anniversary celebration this year. Current members come from the towns of Falmouth, Bourne and Middleboro.

The Solstice Singers children’s chorus, Les Enfants du Soleil, began as a way to include children of the adult singers in the fun, and has continued to enrich the programs over the years. This year, four delightful young singers will charm the audience with their sweet voices and dramatic talents. Twelve-year old Darius Frustaci-Ruzzo has lent his talents to the group since he was four years old, 11-year old Sara Fisichella since she was 7, and 16-year old Emily Brady since she was 11. They are joined this year by newcomer 13-year old Maxwell Rapier, a student at the Waldorf School in Cotuit. The Solstice Singers welcomes children who are interested in singing and acting to join them in their December performances.

Quartet Passacaglia has joined the Solstice Singers in their performances for many years, playing lively instrumental pieces and accompanying the singers on beautiful early instruments, with Jan Elliott of Woods Hole on recorders, krumhorn, and concertina, Tom Hanna of Falmouth on lute, Molly Johnston of Woods Hole on an early cello, the viola da gamba, and Lisa Esperson of Falmouth on a wide array of percussion instruments.

The Vineyard Swordfish dance team will make a special guest appearance at the Solstice Singers’ 20 th anniversary celebration, bringing the excitement of traditional English sword dance to the performance. The team is led by Jan Elliot of Woods Hole and includes dancers from Martha’s Vineyard and Falmouth, as well as musicians Ron Geering of Woods Hole and Jacek Sulanowski of Falmouth. The team performs locally as well as traveling around the US, to England and to other European countries.

The Solstice Singers performances will be held at the Woods Hole Community Hall at 68 Water Street in Woods Hole on Friday Dec. 21 (7:00 pm) and Saturday Dec. 22 (4:00 pm). The hall is accessible to people with disabilities; free parking is available (please see www.solsticesingers.org for details). Advance tickets are available at Eight Cousins Bookstore in Falmouth or at Puritan's in Mashpee and Hyannis. Admission: $18 at the door, $15 in advance ($15 / $12, seniors and students), children under 12 admitted free.
