Concert Series:

Songs of the sea with Tom and Jacek

Versatile musician Tom Goux has been a generous and frequent musical presence at the Woods Hole Public Library, having performed several previous fundraiser concerts with his men’s a cappella group Notescape, as well as with his jazz trio Goux Roux. He is currently teaching ukulele at the Library to a group of enthusiastic students. Before he embarks in April on a West Coast tour with fellow musician Jacek Sulanowski, Tom has offered to bring their evening of “Music and Poetry of the Sea” to benefit the Woods Hole Public Library, on Friday, March 14, at 7:30 pm.

Tom Goux and Jacek Sulanowski have been cruising the New England shoreline (and beyond) for the last three decades and, in Tom’s words, “have inflicted much musical and poetic damage with a pungent mix of sailors’ chanteys, ballads and ditties. There is often irrefutable evidence left in their wake: victims leaving the scene with toes tapping and choruses ringing in their heads, as they happily hum and whistle all the way home.”

Their repertoire spans three centuries of seafaring songs and poetry, featuring an exceptional sampling of Cape and Islands melody and verse. Instrumental accompaniment includes concertina, guitar, ukulele, recorders, bodhran and moustache trumpet. Recordings include releases on the Smithsonian-Folkways and Whaling City Sound labels.

The duo has shared their songs and stories, both historical and contemporary, at festivals and maritime events across the country and in Europe. A partial listing of their performance credits would include maritime museums and historical societies in Boston, Salem, New Bedford, Portland, ME, Mystic Seaport, the American Museum of Natural History in New York and the Smithsonian Institution. West coast appearances have included San Francisco Maritime Historical National Park, Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History and the Columbia River Maritime Museum.

The Tom Goux and Jacek Sulanowski benefit concert on behalf of the Woods Hole Public Library will take place at 7:30 on Friday, March 14, upstairs at the Library. Doors will open at 7:00 pm. Tickets, costing $15, will be available at the door as well as at the Library during regular hours. They also may be purchased at Eight Cousins and the Bank of Woods Hole. The public is cordially invited to attend.
