BRIEFING ON DECADAL SURVEY OF OCEAN SCIENCE
Today at 3:30 p.m. in Redfield Auditorium, Jim Yoder will provide a briefing on the recently released report on the decadal survey of ocean science (DSOS). This meeting is open to all.
Background
The NSF Division of Ocean Sciences contracted with the National Research Council (NRC) of the National Academies (NAS) for a decadal survey of ocean science (DSOS) focused primarily on NSF-funded ocean science. One of the main motivations of the report was the rising cost of operating ocean infrastructure such as the oceanographic fleet, the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) and the Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) and the impact of those costs on funds available to support research grants. The DSOS committee was asked to summarize major ocean research accomplishments over the past decade and to highlight 10 or fewer strategic research priorities for the next decade that will continue to advance scientific understanding of the ocean. Furthermore, DSOS was to consider if there was a need to re-balance future funding between infrastructure operations and research grants, and if so, to use the strategic themes and other information to make recommendations as to how that could be done assuming only level funding for the foreseeable future. DSOS issued its report last Friday ( http://nas-sites.org/dsos2015/ ) recommending a re-balance of funds as described above and recommending specific cuts to ocean infrastructure operations beginning immediately.
