The Vox Hunters Welcome the New Year with Celtic Music and Song
The Woods Hole Folk Music Society’s 45th season continues on January 1 with a concert by Celtic duo The Vox Hunters, returning after their Woods Hole debut in February, 2016. Doors open at 7pm for the 7:30 concert at Community Hall, 68 Water Street.
The Vox Hunters, Armand Aromin and Benedict Gagliardi, are musically bound by a shared love of traditional Irish music as well as an eclectic and ever-growing set of songs from within and beyond the realm of folk music. With a hand-crafted fiddle, concertina, banjo and complementary voices, they present a diverse range of dance tunes and an unorthodox collection of songs. Their inspiration comes from English, American, and Irish folk music and they present an exciting repertoire of energetic dance tunes blended with an unorthodox collection of interesting songs and musical instrumentation.
Armand Aromin is a violin maker and musician based in Providence, Rhode Island. As a teen, he studied fiddle and tin whistle with renowned Irish tunesmiths Jimmy Devine and Patrick Hutchinson in the lyrical and colorful styles of older musicians such as Denis Murphy and Julia Clifford. He studied at Boston’s Berklee College of Music and the University of Limerick, as well as earning a diploma in Violin Making & Repair from the North Bennet Street School in Boston.
In addition to winning the Senior Fiddle championship at the Mid-Atlantic Fleadh Cheoil (Irish Music Festival) in 2010, Mr. Aromin was a finalist in Ireland’s Séan Ó Riada Gold Medal Fiddle Competition in 2011. Since 2010, he has taught fiddle and tin whistle for the Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Eireann cultural organization in Boston.
Mr. Aromin is currently a repair technician at McCarten Violins in Pawtucket, RI, as well as making his own instruments in the classic Cremonese style. In addition to the Vox Hunters he plays with the Boston-based Irish music group, The Ivy Leaf, and has performed with many notable artists including the Dropkick Murphys.
Benedict Gagliardi was born and raised in central Connecticut. Though never taught formally, he was encouraged by notable musicians including Joe Gerhard, Jeanne Freeman and Jon Warner. He is now a regular guest host at McKinnon's in Hartford and The Playwright in Hamden. He has played with several bands including Full Gael and Shinbone Alley, and has performed throughout the Northeast at festivals and concert venues including the Mystic Sea Music Festival.
Mr. Gagliardi placed first in the 2014 Mid-Atlantic Fleadh Duets competition with Jon Warner. Since 2012, he has taught concertina at the Connecticut Academy of Irish Music. In concert he sings and plays banjo, baritone ukulele, harmonica, and melodeon. He is currently teaching biology while pursuing a Master's degree in entomology at the University of Connecticut.
The Vox Hunters duo have performed at a variety of venues, from small scale concerts in coffeehouses, libraries and living rooms, to social dances, weddings, folk music festivals, and other large public spaces. They have played their toe-tapping tunes across all of New England, engaging their audiences in communal singing for a memorable evening of music. Their philosophy is that the search for good songs is endless. While deeply inspired by the English, American, and Irish folk music realm, they look well beyond, saying, "We allow our ears a long musical leash."
Doors open at 7pm for the 7:30 concert. Admission is $20, with discounts for members, seniors, youth and children. Community Hall is handicapped accessible, and street parking is free.
Upcoming performances include: January 15, April Verch Band; Janauary 29, Bill Staines; February 12, Debra Cowan and John Roberts; February 26, Hanneke Cassel, Mike Block and Keith Murphy; March 12, Molsky’s Mountain Drifters; March 26, Steve Gillette and Cindy Mangsen; April 9, The Press Gang.
The Woods Hole Folk Music Society is a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering enjoyment of folk music in all its forms. Concerts are generally held two Sundays per month from October through April. They are made possible by support from its members, season subscribers, volunteers, and performers.
