================================================================
Folk singer and songwriter Bill Staines will make his 44th appearance at the Woods Hole Folk Music Society's January 31 concert. He is the only artist to perform every season since the organization’s founding in 1972.
Bill Staines is a Massachusetts native and a homegrown New England Cowboy. Known for his compelling original songs, gentle baritone voice, deadpan stage humor and unusual left-handed guitar technique, he has been called a national treasure. He has traveled across North America for over four decades, performing at festivals, colleges, concerts, clubs, and coffeehouses.
Mr. Staines first became involved with the Boston-Cambridge folk scene in the 1960s, hosting the Sunday Hootenanny at the legendary Club 47 (now Passim) in Cambridge. Quickly gaining popularity as a singer and songwriter, he was described in 1971 by a Boston Phoenix reviewer as "simply Boston's best performer."
He has many notable performances to his credit, including appearances on Garrison Keillor's “A Prairie Home Companion,” HBO's award-winning series “Deadwood,” and Public Radio's “Mountain Stage.” Additionally, his music has been used in a number of films including “Off and Running ” with Cyndi Lauper and “The Return of the Secaucus Seven,” John Sayles' debut as a writer- director.
Bill Staines's songs reflect both remembrances of the past and optimism for the future. His music is seen as a slice of Americana, filled with cowboys, Yukon adventurers, fishermen, truckers and everyday working people. He sings of the beauty of nature, the challenges of raising children, the endurance of the human spirit, and the comic elements of life on the road. His songs have appeared in grade school music books, church hymnals, and scouting campfire songbooks. Composer David Amram described Bill Staines as "a modern day Stephen Foster … [whose] songs will be around 100 years from now."
Mr. Staines has produced twenty six recordings, along with several music books for adults and children and an autobiography entitled, “The Tour: A Life Between the Lines.” His two family albums, The Happy Wanderer and One More River, have won Parents' Choice Awards. His songs have been recorded by many artists including Peter, Paul, and Mary, Tommy Makem and Liam Clancy, The Highwaymen, Jerry Jeff Walker, Nanci Griffith, Glen Yarborough and others. In 2009, Mr. Staines's song All God's Critters was released as a children's book with illustrations by Caldecott-honored artist Kadir Nelson.
Bill Staines is one of the featured interviewees in The History Project from Caffe Lena in Saratoga Springs, New York, the oldest continuously running folk coffeehouse in the country. He has continually appeared on folk music radio listener polls as a top all-time favorite folk artist. Mr.Staines still performs nearly 200 concerts a year, singing mainly original material and blending gentle wit and dry humor into his performances. His concerts are appropriate for all ages, and audiences are invited to join in on the choruses of many songs.
"One of the best songwriters in folk music today." Associated Press
"...he carries on where Woody [Guthrie] left off, continuing the tradition of stories and characters you wish you knew." - Nanci Griffith
