Scottish fiddle and innovative cello mingle with songs from Canada’s Maritimes

On Sunday, February 26, former U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Champion Hanneke Cassel will team up with contemporary cellist Mike Block and singer and guitarist Keith Murphy to offer an evening of innovative Scottish and Irish fiddle music and songs from Canada’s Maritime provinces. The concert is sponsored by the Woods Hole Folk Music Society, now in its 45th season. It begins at 7:30 at Community Hall, 68 Water St., Woods Hole. Doors open at 7pm; admission is $20, with discounts for members, seniors and youth.

Ms. Cassel is at the forefront of America’s contemporary Scottish fiddle scene, playing new tunes that retain the integrity and soul of traditional music. Keith Murphy, fresh from the Acadian-themed Revels holiday pageant in Cambridge, is a native of Newfoundland with a sophisticated approach to ballads and a driving guitar style. Mike Block is a pioneering cellist and composer who has played with Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Ensemble, Mark O'Connor's Appalachia Waltz Trio, and Darol Anger's Republic of Strings. This trio of acclaimed performers will provide an evening of unique musical diversity.

Fiddler Hanneke Cassel was raised in Oregon and graduated from Berklee College of Music in Boston where she won numerous student awards. She has performed and taught across the United States and Europe, as well as China and New Zealand. The Boston Globe describes her playing as "exuberant and rhythmic, [with] an irresistible playfulness." In 1992 and 1994 she was named the U.S. National Junior Scottish Fiddle Champion and, in 1997, U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Champion.

Ms. Cassel's debut album appeared in 2001. She has since recorded seven albums, and is currently working on a new release featuring Mike Block, Keith Murphy, Christopher Lewis, Jeremy Kittel, Dave Wiesler, and Finnish fiddling legend Antti Järvelä.

Mike Block is a pioneering multi-style cellist, composer, and educator. He has been hailed by Yo-Yo Ma as the "ideal musician of the 21st Century," and acclaimed by the NY Times for his "vital rich-hued solo playing." While studying at Juilliard he joined Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble, as well as Mark O’Connor’s Appalachia Waltz Trio. Mr. Block was one of the first cellists to wear a strap in order to stand and move while playing. He was the first standing cellist to perform at Carnegie Hall, using his own patented strap design. The New York Times called this performance "breathless ... half dance, half dare."

Mr. Block has performed widely on television, on Broadway and in film. In 2011 he was the subject of a feature article in the Wall Street Journal for his Artistic Directorship of the Gala Brooklyn Music Festival. Currently an Associate Professor at the Berklee College of Music, he also leads numerous cello workshops, and as the founding director of the Global Musician Workshop, connects participants from diverse world musical traditions. His recordings blend traditional and original music with cross-cultural collaborations. He has an ongoing project to record the six Bach cello suites in the architecturally and acoustically exceptional bathrooms of famous concert halls.

Keith Murphy is a native of Newfoundland whose traditional song repertoire is based in Eastern Canada, Quebec and his current home, Vermont. His direct and intimate style of singing in English and French matches his rhythmic fingerstyle guitar, further enhanced by classic Quebecois foot percussion. He performs classic Newfoundland and French-Canadian folk songs with a rich palette of textures and open guitar tunings.

Mr. Murphy is an accomplished composer and arranger of traditional music who has also composed for theater and film, including the soundtrack to Ken Burns’s documentary, “The Roosevelts.” He is a featured performer on several recordings and a guest musician on many others. His versions of traditional songs have inspired recordings by groups such as Solas, Uncle Earl and Great Big Sea.

A founding member of Nightingale, the groundbreaking trio known for its sophisticated approach to traditional music, Mr. Murphy is also a mainstay of the Boston fiddle extravaganza “Childsplay,” and performs frequently with his wife, fiddler Becky Tracy. He is a faculty member of the Brattleboro Music Center (BMC), and directs its annual Northern Roots Traditional Music Festival. He also directs WGBH radio’s annual Celtic Sojourn St Partick’s Day concerts held at Sander’s Theater and elsewhere in New England.

Doors open at 7pm for the 7:30 concert. Admission is $20, with discounts for members, seniors, youth and children. Community Hall is handicapped accessible, and street parking is free.

Upcoming performances: March 12, Molsky’s Mountain Drifters; March 26, Steve Gillette and Cindy Mangsen; April 9, The Press Gang.

The Woods Hole Folk Music Society is a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering enjoyment of folk music in all its forms. Concerts are generally held two Sundays per month from October through April. They are made possible by support from its members, season subscribers, volunteers, and performers. Refreshments are served at intermission and donations of baked goods are always welcome.
