Velvet-Voiced Folk Duo to Perform in Woods Hole
Vocal duo Steve Gillette and Cindy Mangsen will perform Sunday March 26 at 7:30 in Woods Hole’s Community Hall at 68 Water St. The concert will feature close harmony singing on both original and traditional songs, with accompaniment on a variety of instruments. The sponsoring organization, Woods Hole Folk Music Society, is now in its 45 th season.
Since their marriage in 1989 Cindy Mangsen and Steve Gillette have performed as a duo, sharing their mutual affinity for traditional an d contemporary folksong. Along with their well-known duet albums and performances, each has enjoyed a rich solo career as well as collaborating with other top artists in the folk and pop music world.
Steve Gillette is best known as a songwriter, having helped to pioneer the folk-pop genre in Los Angeles in the early 1960s. His songs have been performed and recorded by many artists, including Ian & Sylvia, Garth Brooks, John Denver, Linda Ronstadt, Kenny Rogers, Jerry Jeff Walker and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. His early hit “Darcy Farrow” has been recorded by over a hundred artists since it was written in 1966, most recent by Jimmy Dale Gilmore and Nanci Griffith. Mr. Gillette has also written songs for animated film characters, including Walt Disney’s Dumbo, Winnie the Pooh and Jiminy Cricket.
Mr. Gillette’s pioneering book “Songwriting and the Creative Process” has become a standard text in composition classes. He works collaboratively throughout the country producing material for the country and popular music industries, a career he describes as allowing “the freedom to have your own personal truth as an artist, which you earn by chopping wood and carrying water for the industry.” Steve Gillette’s recent release, “The Man”, features music inspired by the vibrant jazz and roots music scene of the 1920s and '30s, accompanied by a narrative which blends fact and fiction from that era. H is father George Gillette is f eatured prominently on the album, playing stride piano.
Cindy Mangsen has been described by Come for to Sing Magazine as "one of the finest singers in American folk music," and by Scott Alarik of the Boston Globe as “arguably the finest traditional singer to emerge from the Chicago folk scene of the 1970s. ” Her specialty is unearthing traditional songs, particularly ballads in the Anglo-American tradition, and bringing them to life through both a cappella renditions and carefully crafted arrangements. She has recorded solo, as a duo with Mr. Gillette, and as a trio with Anne Hills and Priscilla Herdman. Her recent solo album, “Songs of Experience”, won an Editor’s Choice award from Crossroads Magazine. She has also composed songs, including “Dark of the Moon” and “Sunrise,” the latter a tribute to the English traditional singing of the Copper family.
In concert Cindy Mangsen’s warm soprano voice blends with Steve Gillette’s resonant baritone on a wide variety of songs, from their own compositions to traditional treasures and contemporary classics. As an instrumentalist, Mr. Gillette specializes in a complex guitar style, a combination of flatpicking and a two-fingered picking technique, with the occasional foray onto fiddle for traditional tunes. Ms. Mangsen plays banjo, guitar and mountain dulcimer as well as English concertina, a small button accordion whose gentle sustained notes support the pair’s voices on solo lines and close harmonies.
“Still just about the classiest duo around, with sublime traditional and contemporary folk. Gentlest of voices, sweetest of acoustic picking, fine songs. Lovely music.” –-Folk Roots Magazine
