Singer and guitarist Guy Davis is considered a master of traditional blues style, earning the nickname "Ambassador of the Blues." He was born to well-known actors Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis, and taught himself guitar at a young age by watching and listening to other musicians. His parents then sent him to music camps, where he immersed himself in many musical genres including the classic blues style of Huddie Ledbetter ("Lead Belly"), which became one of his strongest influences.
Mr. Davis’s highly praised 1995 debut album Stomp Down the Rider marked his arrival on the professional scene. He earned acclaim for his deft acoustic playing and soulful vocal technique, along with his songwriting skill. Since that time he has performed at theaters and festivals across the country, as well as appearing on the Conan O’Brien and David Letterman television shows and A Prairie Home Companion, Mountain Stage, World Cafe and E-town radio broadcasts. A recent international tour took him from the Equator to the Arctic Circle.
In addition to his career as a touring musician, Guy Davis is a stage and film actor. As a writer who has created and performed his own material Off Broadway, he has received rave reviews. In 2009 he performed on Broadway in the musical Finian’s Rainbow, reprising a role once inhabited by legendary blues harmonica player Sonny Terry.
Mr. Davis's reverence and respect for blues pioneers and innovators is clear from his recordings and live performances. His musical storytelling is influenced by artists such as Blind Willie McTell and Big Bill Broonzy; his style, from artists as diverse as Fats Waller, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Sonny Terry, and renowned Nigerian drummer Babatunde Olatunji. He also claims Garrison Keillor as an inspirational influence, along with Pete Seeger and Muddy Waters. His performances explore not only blues but folk, gospel and ragtime. However, the blues were his first and greatest love.
Mr. Davis has released more than a dozen albums, many of which have topped charts around the country. He has been nominated for nine Handy Awards, including Best Traditional Blues Album, Best Blues Song and Best Acoustic Blues Artist. His 2004 album Legacy was chosen as one of the Best CDs of the Year by National Public Radio and his 2013 release, Juba Dance, was number one on the Roots Music Charts for eight weeks. His latest release, Sonny & Brownie’s Last Train, a tribute to the legendary duo Sony Terry and Brownie McGhee, was nominated as a Finalist for a Grammy award in 2017.
Continuing his mission to spread the blues around the world, Mr. Davis has recently increased his time spent in teaching. “I’ve had beginning and intermediate students, and I try to give them enough of the basics that they can go into a jam session and create more licks out of the ones they know. And I try to give them a bit of my philosophy.” His work as an actor, author, and music teacher mark him as a renaissance man of the blues.
Guy Davis's main aim is to bring people together through music. “With the world falling apart it’s up to all of us to be ambassadors and to spread the music everywhere we can,” he says. Whether performing before 15,000 at a festival or at an intimate gathering, Guy Davis indelibly sears his listeners' memories with his passion for the blues.
