RESEARCH AND MONITORING INTERNSHIPS (2)

Summer 2022

The North and South Rivers Watershed Association is an environmental non-profit on the South Shore of Massachusetts. Through our role as the regional partner for the Massachusetts Bays Partnership<https://www.mass.gov/orgs/massachusetts-bays-national-estuary-partnership>, we have multiple research and monitoring projects ongoing throughout the South Shore. Our projects for summer 2022 include, but are not limited to: 1) water quality monitoring; 2) monitoring blue mussels 3) eelgrass mapping; 4) monitoring river herring and eastern brook trout; 5) horseshoe crab spawning surveys; and 6) marine invasive species surveys. Many of these programs include working with citizen scientists and providing outreach. These interns would work along with our Eelgrass Intern to complete these projects. One Research and Monitoring Internship will focus more on our water quality and organism-based projects, while the other will focus more on habitat, but interns will assist each other in the field.

The NSRWA seeks two research interns with at least two years in undergraduate biology, chemistry, or environmental science or one year plus experience. The candidate should be willing and able to help with field work, data entry and analysis, as well as occasional tasks to help the NSRWA like working at events and assisting with outreach.

Required: Be willing to work independently; be willing to work in adverse conditions including hot weather, slippery surfaces, muddy/wet conditions; use of Excel

Helpful: Experience with GIS mapping, basic knowledge of riverine/estuarine/marine ecology, ability to use a kayak, ability to use a small motorboat

Skills gained: Field data collection, experimental design, identification of wetland and estuarine organisms, public interaction

This paid internship would entail 75% (~24 hours/week) field research and related duties as described above. Due to the nature of our organization, we anticipate that the intern may also spend up to 25% (~8 hours/week) of their time assisting with outreach and event support.

The intern will be required to have their own vehicle but will be reimbursed for mileage. No housing will be provided.

Desired timeframe: 12 weeks June through August, with extensions on either end preferred. Preferred hours are 9:30am-4:00pm, 5 days per week, with occasional hours on weekends (events) and at night (horseshoe crab surveys).

To apply: Please e-mail resume and cover letter to Dr. Sara P. Grady, NSRWA Watershed Ecologist, at sara at nsrwa.org<mailto:sara at nsrwa.org> by March 14th. For questions, please call (781) 659-8168.

Summer/Fall 2022 EELGRASS MONITORING INTERNSHIP

The North and South Rivers Watershed Association is an environmental non-profit on the South Shore of Massachusetts. Through our role as the regional partner for the Massachusetts Bays Partnership, we have been working to monitor eelgrass loss in Duxbury/Kingston/Plymouth with the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries<https://www.mass.gov/orgs/division-of-marine-fisheries>.

The NSRWA seeks a research intern with at least three years in undergraduate biology, chemistry, or environmental science (late undergraduate or graduate student). The candidate will be tasked with organizing and coordinating volunteers for August eelgrass surveys, including soliciting boat owners in the Bays. The candidate will also be responsible for maintaining field survey equipment and assisting with field survey training. Finally, the candidate will assist with data organization and entry after the monitoring efforts are complete. This intern will also assist the Research and Monitoring Interns with our other work and focus on implementing our habitat-based projects.

Required: Be willing to work independently; be willing to work in adverse conditions including hot weather, slippery surfaces, muddy/wet conditions; use of Excel; comfort managing volunteers; experience with ecological field survey

Helpful: Experience with GIS mapping, basic knowledge of riverine/estuarine/marine ecology (eelgrass in particular), ability to use a small motorboat

Skills gained: Field data collection, experimental design, eelgrass ecology, public interaction

The intern will be required to have their own vehicle but will be reimbursed for mileage. No housing will be provided.

Desired timeframe: During June-August, this will be a 32 hour/week paid internship focusing on preparing for and completing the eelgrass surveys. Please note that due to the nature of the project it may be necessary to work more than 32 hours a week on some weeks. During September and October, this is a 16 hour/week paid internship focusing on data organization, entry, and analysis – you must be willing to complete work in the fall as well.

To apply: Please e-mail resume and cover letter to Dr. Sara P. Grady, NSRWA Watershed Ecologist, at sara at nsrwa.org<mailto:sara at nsrwa.org> by March 14th. For questions, please call (781) 659-8168.
