More Background

The Woodwell Climate Research Center along with the Coonamessett River Trust (CRT) has collaborated with the Town of Falmouth (MA) to restore the Coonamessett River to revive alewife, blueback herring and brook trout populations as well as other wildlife. The goals were to provide information that guides river restoration; understand the restoration needs for river herring and sea run brook trout; and, educate the next generation about these important issues.

The Woodwell Center is an organization of researchers who work with a worldwide network of partners to understand and combat climate change and protect the environment. River and wetland habitat quality and quantity are critical global challenges which are exacerbated by climate change. To address them, WCRC scientists estimate river flows, collect and analyze water and the plants and animals that live in water from Cape Cod to the Amazon and Arctic. This provides insight into these aquatic systems as well as the watersheds that feed them. The CRT is a volunteer-based nonprofit founded in 2006 whose mission is: "To promote and restore the environmental integrity of the Coonamessett River and its surrounding lands." They accomplish their mission by engaging in scientific, educational and recreational activities focused on the Coonamessett River.

The Coonamessett River Trust is expanding our educational programs on the restoration of the Coonamessett River. We are building on the success of our Spring 4th grade field trips by offering a “hands-on” experience for 5th graders in the following Fall. The 4th graders are guided around the lower river and asked to think about why and how the river was restored, and the role individuals can make in the world. For the 5th grade trips, we ask the students to be “River Detectives.” They will test two hypotheses: “Is the Coonamessett River healthy?” Did the restoration “work”? Students will test these hypotheses by observing the physical features of the river (habitat), testing the water chemistry (water quality) and sampling the biology for macro-invertebrates on the river bottom (healthy biodiversity). The students will wade into the river to collect these samples and then compare them to healthy rivers. This links geography, ecology, restoration and sustainability to lessons learned in the 4th grade tour.
