On Thursday, April 17 at 12PM ET, the University of Rhode Island STEEP Superfund Research Program is hosting a webinar on PFAS contamination in Cape Cod’s surface waters and fish. Heidi Pickard, PhD, will discuss her recent research on PFAS in fish near Joint Base Cape Cod, including the impact of firefighting foams, septic systems, and agricultural runoff. Barnstable Town Manager Mark Ells will discuss how local government is responding with strategies to mitigate water contamination.

Heidi Pickard, PhD
Lead Consultant at Ramboll
Dr. Heidi Pickard is an expert on PFAS and other emerging contaminants. A former STEEP trainee, she recently completed a postdoctoral fellowship and PhD in Environmental Engineering from Harvard University, where she studied how contaminants released by human activity move through the environment and affect ecosystems.

Mark Ells
Town Manager, Barnstable, MA
With nearly 30 years of local government experience, Mark Ells has played a central role in addressing PFAS contamination on Cape Cod. He leads efforts on mitigation strategies, community engagement, and regulatory initiatives to protect water resources and public health.

STEEP Researcher and Senior Scientist at Silent Spring Institute
Dr. Schaider’s work focuses on PFAS and environmental health, with particular attention to how exposures affect communities and how science can inform solutions.

The April 17 webinar is the second in a series launched by STEEP called "PFAS on Cape Cod: Connecting Communities with Science for Solutions." The series aims to provide community members, health professionals, and policymakers with up-to-date research, practical solutions, and an opportunity to engage directly with experts.
