World-Class Science Storytelling Workshop Comes to Woods Hole
Culminating in a Public Story Slam Celebrating Science, Story, and Community on June 24
June 2, 2025
WOODS HOLE, MA — This June, some of the world’s leading storytelling instructors and practitioners are coming to Woods Hole to teach a first-of-its-kind workshop to help scientists elevate and bring to life the human side of their research. The workshop, co-hosted by Woods Hole non-profit organizations The Transom Story Lab<http://transom.org/> and Atlantic Public Media<http://www.atlantic.org/>, will bring together a top story director from The Moth and seasoned public radio producers to work with scientists who will develop personal, powerful stories about the work they do.
Following the three-day training workshop, Transom Story Lab and Atlantic Public Media will host a public Story Slam where some of the participants will share their stories, and audience members will be invited to do the same. The event will be Tuesday, June 24, from 7–9 PM at the Woods Hole Community Hall. Jay Allison, award-winning public radio producer and founder of The Moth Radio Hour, will emcee the event, with music from renowned musician Carla Kihlstedt.
"We believe that great science and great stories both emerge from curiosity," said Sophie Crane, Executive Director of Transom. “This workshop is about helping scientists share not just what they do, but the inspiration and humanity fueling their labors, why it matters — and why it matters here, in this community.”
The workshop aims to bridge the growing gap between science and society by helping researchers speak not just to peers, but to neighbors, families, and the broader public about the remarkable stories behind their work.
The organizers hope participants will represent scientists as well as a range of occupations related to scientific work —including engineers, divers, pilots, sea cooks, administrators, spouses —all those who support scientific study. They will come from Woods Hole’s celebrated scientific institutions and beyond, and their stories will be human, mind-blowing, moving, and funny.
There are a few workshop spots still open, and those interested can apply at this link<https://transom.slideroom.com/#/login/program/83943/FKyxNGzW8L>.
The Science Story Slam on June 24 is open to the public. Tickets are $25 for the general public and $10 for students, and are available here<https://www.zeffy.com/ticketing/making-waves-a-science-story-slam>.
