Job Overview

Friends of Herring River (FHR), a nonprofit organization based in Wellfleet, Massachusetts, seeks an individual with a degree in biology, ecology, or a related field with relevant research and applied experience to serve as Cape Cod Restoration Technician (Restoration Tech). Work schedule, benefits eligibility, and start date are flexible and to be determined; the role is for an initial duration within two years, longer if the need and funding allows.

As a member of the FHR staff, the Restoration Tech will actively work alongside and support the Cape Cod Restoration Coordinator (CCRC) to provide field- and lab-based activities for four restoration

sites based on Cape Cod. These sites include: Herring River Estuary in Wellfleet; Goose Pond at Mass Audubon Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary; Jehu Pond and Sage Lot Pond within Waquoit Bay.

The Restoration Tech will play a crucial role in monitoring restoration efforts, conducting ecosystem

assessment surveys to evaluate habitat integrity and biodiversity, and gathering and analyzing data to inform adaptive management strategies.

Responsibilities may include field activities such as maintaining and calibrating water and tide station equipment to ensure accurate data collection, visiting groundwells, collecting and processing water samples, runneling, and vegetation surveys. The Restoration Tech will contribute to research reports, document restoration strategies, and support community education through preparation of materials and presentations. Proficiency in field data collection and analysis methodologies, equipment troubleshooting, and a strong commitment to safety and environmental protocols are essential.

The Restoration Tech role does not include supervisory responsibilities. Work plan guidance and technical expertise will be provided by the Cape Cod Restoration Coordinator. The FHR Executive Director is responsible for the overall employment and performance of the FHR staff. Work plan input from FHR’s collaborators and partners in this grant, Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (WBNERR) and Mass Audubon may occasionally inform the work. These partners will provide access to laboratory and field equipment, and FHR has grant funds to purchase materials and supplies. The Restoration Tech may participate in meetings of the Herring River Restoration Project team, the tidal restoration project for nearly 1,000 acres of a degraded salt marsh estuary in Wellfleet MA/National Park Services Cape Cod National Seashore, and in a regional coalition of restoration practitioners and leaders. The anticipated restoration outcomes will benefit intertidal/coastal habitats, ecosystem services, and the climate.
