This community forum focuses on Cape Cod Commission’s upcoming regulatory review of the proposed Cape Cod Canal Pipeline Relocation Project within the context of the fossil fuel industry's plans to expand fracked-gas infrastructure across the U.S. northeast, as well as Governor Healey’s “all of the above” energy strategy.

Relocation of bridge-attached methane gas pipelines is a necessary precursor to construction of new Sagamore and Bourne bridges spanning the Cape Cod Canal. Exploiting $300 million in state and federal bridge replacement funds reserved for pipeline relocation, Algonquin Gas Transmission (AGT) instead proposes a new pipeline, running under the canal, that would be capable of delivering at least twice as much fracked fuel onto Cape Cod.

AGT’s approach aligns with the strategy of its corporate parent, Enbridge, which is attempting to increase the capacity of individual pipeline segments throughout southern New England while avoiding comprehensive environmental reviews. Consistent with the stated goals of the Trump Administration and the current position of the Healey Administration, federal and state agencies have not required AGT to justify or mitigate its plan to upsize the canal pipeline. In September, Cape Cod Commission will begin reviewing the proposed project as a Development of Regional Impact (DRI).

On August 18th, Sierra Club will introduce AGT’s proposed project and other misguided efforts to bring more fracked gas into New England, as well as explain why the Commission’s DRI review process is so important for Cape Cod’s energy and climate future. Attendees will also learn about upcoming opportunities to participate in the DRI process.
