NECWA's Marine Wildlife Stranding Project - Rescue and Research

Overview: This internship is focused on the fall and early winter strandings of ocean sunfish, torpedo rays, sea turtles, marine birds, and other wildlife that strand along the shores of Cape Cod and surrounding areas. Interns act as research assistants and are engaged in all phases of a project, including field work, data input, and data analysis.

The New England Coastal Wildlife Alliance (NECWA) is seeking high school, college, and graduate students for the upcoming fall stranding season. Interns work alongside NECWA staff members to conduct a variety of activities focused on rescuing and researching marine wildlife that strand along the shores of New England. Much of the work is focused on Cape Cod, but some strandings occur in surrounding areas, including south shore MA.  NECWA is the only organization that rescues and studies “marine misfits” including ocean sunfish and torpedo rays. NECWA rescues injured seabirds, sea ducks, and gulls and transports them to local rehab facilities. NECWA assists other rescue organizations focused on sea turtles and marine mammals.

Time Requirement and Support:

•            2 to 3-month commitment

•            30 to 40-hour work week

•            Internship positions are non-paid and can be coordinated privately or through a school or university program. Interns must provide their own transportation to and from the field office in Eastham, MA.

•            Housing can be provided on the Cape if needed.

Internship activities:

•            Walking beaches and harbors to scout for live marine wildlife in distress or dead marine animals that have washed ashore.

•      Rescuing live ocean sunfish, torpedo rays, and other marine wildlife. Rescuers use kayaks, inflatables, and small boats during rescue attempts. All gear is provided.

•      Necropsying ocean sunfish and torpedo ray carcasses to learn more about their biology and ecology. Necropsies involve the collection of stranding information as well as body measurements, weights, photographs, and tissues for analysis.

•      Inputting data and performing analysis using Microsoft Excel, Adobe PhotoShop, and online programs through our private Google Drive.

•      Participating in festivals and other community outreach events at schools, libraries, and other venues in the New England area.
