Dear Xenopus community,
I recently met Deanne Wehmeier who has been running a X. Laevis colony for 20 years. Due to an untimely death of the CEO, she needs to shut down her facility and would like to donate as many frogs as possible to researchers. She has about 400 frogs right now. She needs to vacate the facility by 6/30 so the frogs should ideally go to other homes before then.
I am passing on Deanne's message here:
"Per our conversation here's a little bit about our lab - Fort Environmental Laboratories Inc was formed as an aquatic toxicology laboratory in 2000. We have been at our present location since 2005. We use strictly X. laevis frogs for our breeding purposes. The frogs are bred for analytical studies and the embryos are the testing vehicle. We started our initial colony of frogs purchasing from Xenopus 1 in MI. Doug Fort, our President and founder was very accomplished in raising up our colony from embryo stage. We currently have a colony of approximately 450 males/females on hand. We have a log of the frogs kept in each tank and to our knowledge we have not had any major outbreaks/diseases. The frogs are fed daily and tanks are cleaned on a 3-4 times/week schedule. We use a dechlor water drip system.
Due to the untimely passing of Doug in September 2024 we are closing our lab facility effective June 30th. I am looking to rehome these frogs as many as possible and want to avoid euthanizing as much as possible. I realize our time constraints pose a tight schedule, but I did not make contact with Coral until very recently. We have always had a very healthy colony and Doug was known in the ED community as the Frog Man. He was a frequent presenter at SETAC and SOT meetings and maintained a position on the board.
If you have interest in taking any of these animals, please contact me as soon as possible via email at deannew.fortlabs at gmail.com<mailto:deannew.fortlabs at gmail.com> or cell at 405-612-2279. At this time I am willing to donate the frogs, but if shipping is involved, shipping costs would need to be paid by the recipient.
Best regards,
Deanne”
