Waquoit Bay Reserve hosts Hands-On Weatherization Workshop on October 17

As the cold weather approaches, homeowners are reminded to button up their homes, not only to save money on heating bills, but also to increase comfort. Motivated by these same reasons, and the desire to fulfill its mission of stewardship of the coast, Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve is sponsoring a hands-on weatherization workshop in collaboration with the Cape and Islands Renewable Energy Collaborative’s “Community Energy Corps” initiative. The workshop will be held Saturday, October 17 from 9-noon (doors open at 8:30 with coffee and bagels) at the Waquoit Bay Reserve Headquarters. Registration is required at www.waquoitbayreserve.org .

Sign-in and continental breakfast begins at 8:30 am. The program will start at 9:00 am in the Visitor Center with presentations by Chris Powicki, CIRenew and WeeInfo , and Joan Muller, Education Coordinator at the Waquoit Bay Reserve on the basic concepts behind air sealing and insulation as well as information on free energy audit programs and rebates available in this area. Following the presentation, Chris Mazzola, Building Diagnostics will demonstrate the blower door test that highlights where improvements need to be made. Participants will be split into groups and head to a couple of the Reserve’s old buildings until noon for the hands-on portion of the morning. Participants should wear appropriate work clothing and bring work gloves if they have them.

The Reserve’s Education Coordinator Joan Muller sees this as a great way to learn and be of service at the same time, “It’s a great opportunity for community members to help the Reserve “button up” for the winter while gaining confidence and valuable training in how to do these actions in their own homes.”

Chris Powicki, Coordinator for CIRenew’s Community Energy Corps looks at it this way, “Once they’re trained, participants can request to be on a call list to help other organizations such as food pantries or churches, for instance, to lower their energy bills , or they can simply implement these actions in their own homes. Either way, it’s helping us to fulfill the goal of reducing energy use on the Cape.”

Participants will gain experience with a variety of skills including insulating pipes, applying caulking, plugging an unused fireplace, and other simple sealing and weatherization measures. To sign up, please register at www.waquoitbayreserve.org . For more information, please call 508-457-0495 x 107.
