About the Organization
Project Oceanology's mission since 1972 has been to nurture enthusiasm for science and for our planet's marine environment from our waterfront facilities on Long Island Sound in Groton. As a year-round marine science and environmental education organization operated by a 501(c)(3) nonprofit association of boards of education, colleges, and other educational institutions, Project O has pioneered a hands-on, inquiry-oriented approach to science through programs meeting state education standards. Using our research vessels, skiffs, oceanographic equipment, and marine laboratories, Project O leads more than 25,000 students and adults annually as they learn about the ocean, estuaries, rivers, and marine life through firsthand, on-the-water science-rich experiences in the surrounding waters of Long Island Sound, Fishers Island Sound, and the Thames River.

Executive Director
Project Oceanology seeks a self-driven and highly competent Executive Director to lead the organization, develop growth opportunities aligned with the mission, and oversee all operations. Exceptional communication skills are critical to promoting our mission and outreach. Duties include:
● communicating the vision, mission, and core values of Project Oceanology to staff, school officials, partners, local communities, contributors, governmental entities, and the public at large
● managing a comprehensive organizational budget, including state and federal grants
● overseeing all financial operations
● developing additional revenue streams
● developing members of the board of directors and ensuring compliance with organizational bylaws by organizing meetings and activities
● managing facilities and vessels
● managing lease, benefits, and liability insurance renewals
● providing leadership and oversight to all staff to achieve high performance through mentoring, coaching, and professional development
● ensuring policies and practices are in place for safe and efficient daily operations

The Executive Director will report to the Chairperson of the Board of Directors. Applicants should have knowledge of marine science and broad interest in oceans, including coastal ecosystems, fisheries resources, human interactions, and management issues. Salary is commensurate with experience and credentials, $110k-$135k.

Education, Experience and Training:
● Minimum Master’s degree required
● Educational coursework in biology, marine science, or environmental science preferred but not required
● Evidence of successful leadership and supervisory experience is required
● Minimum of five years in education, business management, and/or nonprofit administration
● Experience in finance management, including planning and managing budgets required
● A track record of excellence in organizational management with the ability to hire, coach, and evaluate staff, and develop a high performance team required
● Knowledge of Next Generation Science Standards and/or curriculum development experience preferred but not required
● Proven fundraising experience and/or grant writing experience preferred but not required
● Demonstrated ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups required
● Strong written and verbal communication skills required
● USCG license preferred but not required
