Folk musician Joel Mabus performs in Woods Hole

Falmouth, MA - April 2 3 , 2009 - The Woods Hole Folk Music Society series will complete its 37th season on Sunday, May 3 with a performance by Joel Mabus. The concert takes place at 7:30 PM in the Community Hall at 68 Water Street in Woods Hole.

Singer, songwriter and instrumentalist Joel Mabus is considered a maverick in the folk music world, singing and playing instruments in many styles. He was born in southern Illinois, describing his hometown as "105 miles southeast of Mark Twain, 190 miles northwest of Bill Monroe, 110 miles southwest of Burl Ives and just over the river and up the hill from Scott Joplin." His mother and father , a 3rd generation fiddle champion and a banjo player, were professional entertainers who barnstormed the Midwest with road shows for the parent comany of the Grand Ole Opry.

Mr. Mabus launched his own career in 1971, performing in coffeehouses while in college. Since 1978 he has has recorded 19 albums of original and traditional music. The Banjo Monologues, blending old-time music and storytelling, placed 6 th in the 2007 Folk Radio charts; the following year he placed 4 th with Retold, a reissue of his early original songs. In 2008, Mabus was nominated for the Traditional Music Act of the year at the international Folk Alliance Awards , having received the "Lantern Bearer's Award" in 2006 for a career of performing excellence.

A mainstay on the national folk circuit, Joel Mabus has performed in concert with John Prine, Joan Baez, Tom Paxton and many other top folk musicians, and has been a featured performer at clubs and festivals including the Philadelphia Folk Festival and Vancouver Folk Festival. Performances highlight his eclectic repertoire: ancient ballads accompanied on mountain banjo, humorous original songs about modern life, Irish melodies picked on guitar, classic blues, jazz and swing music, Carter family songs , and fiddle tunes. As one fan said, "It's music from the heart that hits you right between the eyes."

According to Chris Rietz of Musichound Folk, "It is hard to imagine another artist on the folk scene who combines the same concise, deceptively understated, lyrical insight and sometimes devastating wit with such world-class instrumental prowess."

The concert starts at 7:30 PM. Doors open at 7 PM. Admission is $15 ($12 members, $10 youth, $5 children, $1 off for seniors). The hall is handicapped accessible. Street parking is free after 6 PM.

The Woods Hole Folk Music Society is a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering enjoyment of folk music in all its forms. Concerts are generally held on the first and third Sunday of each month from October to May. They are made possible by support from its members, season subscribers, volunteers, and performers.
