Best-selling author to speak at Falmouth Academy
Author George Howe Colt will discuss and read from his best-selling National Book Award finalist book, The Big House, at Falmouth Academy on Monday, March 1, at 7 p.m. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Faced with the sale of the century-old family house on Cape Cod where he had spent 42 summers, George Howe Colt returned for one last stay with his wife and children. The Big House is a poignant tribute to the eleven-bedroom jumble of gables, bays, and dormers that watched over weddings, divorces, deaths, anniversaries, birthdays, breakdowns, and love affairs for five generations.
“The Big House was sold, but spared the wrecker's ball. It suffered only the lesser indignity of renovation. The poison ivy has been plucked, the Sackett board and eelgrass walls gutted. The Big House stays the same only in the pages of this fine book,” said the New York Times of Colt’s best-seller.
Falmouth Academy is committed to serving the Falmouth community as a cultural resource. One of the ways in which we fulfill that commitment is through the Falmouth Academy Community Series, which features lectures on topics of global interest. This series introduces the community to provocative and entertaining ideas in a forum that allows interaction; every speaker opens the floor to audience questions, and our audiences are often standing-room only. Falmouth Academy inaugurated its Community Series in 2001 with Atlantic Monthly correspondent Robert Kaplan. Other speakers have included NPR’s Bill Littlefield, geologist Beth Schwarzman and ESPN’s Peter Gammons.
The 2009-2010 Falmouth Academy Community Series ends on May 24 with filmmaker Beth Murphy at 6:30 p.m. She will show and discuss her film, Beyond Belief, which chronicles two American war widows and their work with war widows in Afghanistan. The 2010-2011 Community Series speakers will be announced in the fall.
Falmouth Academy is located at 7 Highfield Drive in Falmouth. For more information, please call 508-457-9696 or visit the school on the Web at www.falmouthacademy.org.
