Hit and Run History: The Columbia Expedition

Woods Hole Public Library

The Woods Hole Public Library will host a new small film company named “Hit and Run History” on Monday evening April 5 at 7 PM. The company is a Cape Cod affair with one film completed and several grants under their belt. Just this year they have received an unprecedented ten grants from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, through the local community sub-sets.

In their belief that a documentary can blend historic documents and present day filming , they travel to sites that were involved with the Columbia Expedition, the first American voyage ‘round the world, 200 years ago. For instance, they filmed on the North River in Marshfield where the Columbia was built in 1773, interviewing boat-builders there now. Locations scattered throughout eastern Massachusetts were filmed, including the Massachusetts Historical Society, Salem’s Derby Wharf, Hull’s Fort Revere and the New Bedford Whaling Museum. The film crew also gets involved in the telling of the story, and a focus on the “making of” the documentary becomes intrinsic to the program.

The producer and narrator, Andrew Buckley, an eleventh generation Cape Codder, calls himself a “gumshoe historian” with a new approach to talking about history. As Buckley says “There’s history out there. Get in the car and we’ll go find it!”

Hit and Run History, hot on the trail of the Columbia Expedition, has been screening their second episode in nearly a dozen communities here. “We’re grateful for the support, and excited to share our latest adventure with audiences.” The pilot is currently being offered for consideration to various TV networks like Discovery, the Travel Channel and PBS. Hit and Run History: The Columbia Expedition™ is a production of Thunderball Entertainment Group.

This event at the Woods Hole Public Library is free and open to the public and will be held in the large meeting room in the lower level, which is completely handicapped accessible.
