What if you could prevent even one family from hearing the words “you have cancer”?

Cancer is a word heard too often in our community. That is why the American Cancer Society is offering Cape residents a special enrollment of the Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3) in Falmouth on Wednesday, June 13 th .

The goal of this nationwide study is to help researchers better understand the lifestyle, environmental and genetic factors that cause or prevent cancer and will save lives. The study involves recruiting men and women from various racial/ethnic backgrounds from across the U.S. to participate and build on evidence from the previous Cancer Prevention studies, which helped discover the link between cigarette smoking and lung cancer and the role obesity plays in the risk of several cancers.

Over two hundred and fifty Cape Cod residents have participated in the study over the past few years through the Relay For Life events on Cape. We are hopeful that by encouraging the Falmouth community to join us, we will help this study reach its ultimate goal of eliminating cancer as a major health burden for this and future generations.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE AND WHAT DOES PARTICIPATION INVOLVE?

If you are between the ages of 30 and 65 years old and have never been diagnosed with cancer , you are eligible to enroll. If you are interested in enrolling, please follow these simple steps:

· Visit www.seeuthere.com/cps3enroll/falmouth to schedule your 30 minute appointment. Appointment will take place at Falmouth Public Library on Wednesday, June 13 th between 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.

· After scheduling your appointment , you will receive a confirmation email with instructions to go online and complete the comprehensive survey which will ask for detailed information on lifestyle, behavioral, and other factors related to health. Completing this survey will take approximately 45-60 minutes.

· At your appointment , you will be asked to sign an informed consent form, complete a short survey, and provide a waist measure and a small blood sample (similar to a doctor’s visit). The blood sample will be taken by a certified, trained phlebotomist and all personal information and any individual results of blood analyses that may be performed will be kept strictly confidential by CPS-3 research staff.

· At home , you will be asked to complete mailed surveys every few years over the next 20-30 years to update lifestyle, medical, and behavioral information.

Help us take advantage of this incredible opportunity to learn more about this disease that takes too much from too many. We hope you will all take part in this historic study, and please share this message with all those you know and encourage them to join in this fight.

For more information about CPS-3, please visit cancer.org/cps3 , email cps3 at cancer.org or call toll-free 1.888.604.5888. To schedule your appointment go to www.seeuthere.com/cps3enroll/falmouth .
