Wild Edible & Medicinal Plants Field School
Saturday, May 19–Sunday, May 20
Offered by Mass Audubon’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary
Led by Sharon Ackland, Ethnobotanist and Dennis Murley, Wellfleet Bay Naturalist
Discover the great diversity of edible plants on walks in a variety of coastal communities. During the two days significant time will be spent outdoors in the fields, forests, beach, and marshes of the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary learning to identify and harvest both edible and medicinal plants, led by ethnobotanist Sharon Ackland. Information will also be shared about what has been learned in the modern laboratory about the value and composition of these plants. Recipes will be provided so you can learn to prepare these plants for food, cosmetics, or even for aromatherapy. And each day will start with a "larger picture" approach. Naturalist Dennis Murley will provide an orientation to the natural communities studied that day, sharing information on how these communities function as habitats and the wildlife they support--important to understanding how the individual plants fit into the ecology of the area.
Fee for this course is $235 for Mass Audubon members; $255 non-members; includes continental breakfast on first day. Sanctuary housing available at $30/night. Class size is limited to just 10 participants and space is still available. Click here for additional details on this course.
