is here! And never fear- we have another great month of events at the FBL!

Hot summer days are here, and you may be getting ready to have a great
summer of cycling! More and more people are out enjoying the long,
beautiful days, biking both on the bike bath and around town. If your bike
isn't quite ready to operate, come by an Open Shop Night at the Bike Lab
(Thursdays 7-9 or the first Saturday from 10-1) to get up and running. What
better way to go to the beach than by bicycle? Check out the events
calendar to see what is happening this month!

*First Friday Group Ride, July 3rd*


Our next group ride will be the first Friday of July. All are welcome as we
explore Falmouth by bike!  Where will we go? What will we do? What might
await us at the finish?  The ride will be determined based on the ability
of the riders who come- so it will work for all levels of cyclists!  Please
remember that children should be accompanied by an adult.

*Earn a Bike: July Sessions*


There are two sessions of Earn-a-Bike during July (Session 1, July
13-17 grades 6-9; Session 2, July 20-24, grades 2-5) with limited space
still available.  This program is an excellent way to increase riding
abilities and learn basic maintenance skills! Visit

*Continuing Open Shop*
Our Open Shop has been very busy, meeting the needs of students visiting
for the summer, people looking to get bikes working again after a long
winter in the garage, and anyone else who swings by (Thursdays 7-9 and
Saturday, July 11th 10-1). In the past several weeks, we have re-homed
nearly 30 bicycles to people in need- great work everyone!

*Pedal Power, July 11th*

The Falmouth Bike Lab is trying something new- as part of our goal to
promote transportation independence in town, we will host our very first
"Pedal Power" event! On Saturday, July 11th from 10-1, the bike lab will
provide adult bicycles to people for a suggested donation of $20 (although
it is not required!).  In addition, we will have food, music, and
information about the bike lab programs.  Come down to support this great
program!

*New in the Falmouth Enterprise: Bicycles!*

A new bi-weekly column in the Enterprise features cycling issues in
Falmouth- written by members of the Bikeways Committee, it is a great way
to keep up with all things bikes!

Michael Quarella! Michael provided this information about himself:
*I am a member of Barnstable County AmeriCorps Cape Cod with my friend
Lizzy. Together we take on all a wide variety of community service projects
on Cape Cod with the rest of our AmeriCorps team. Personally, I love taking
long rides down the Shining Sea bike path and hanging out in Woods Hole.
Bikes are awesome** because though they seem complicated, they are*
*actually*
* simple machines that can be understood with some studying. Volunteering
with the Bike Lab has been awesome because we have had the pleasure of
meeting and hanging out with some of the Cape's finest 7th graders who also
love biking! Not to mention, Mr. J-Tagz is one of the top bicycle
instructors in the world**.   Remember, "You can't buy happiness but you
can buy a bike and that's pretty close."  - Unknown*

*What is your occupation?*
*Ocean Scientist *
*What do you like about bicycles?*
*I like the freedom they give you, the exercise you get, and the fact that
they are a cheap and carbon-free form of transport.*
*What do you like about volunteering with the Bike Lab?*
*I like the sense of community - there are always familiar faces around and
usually a few new people to meet and welcome. It's a great place to get
advice and help on bike maintenance in a relaxed, judgement-free
environment.*
*Where is your favorite place to cycle and or walk in Falmouth?*
*I love cycling down surf drive with the sea to one side and the ponds to
the other - as long as I have the wind at my back! *
*What else do you want people to know about you?*
*I usually try and avoid cycling on busy roads (even Main Street can be a
scary place to bike!), but am working hard to have the courage to do so as
this will be the only way that cars will become familiar with sharing the
roads. I recently got some bright clothing for cycling so I can be extra
visible!*

                  * Organization Spotlight: Friends of Falmouth Bikeways*

The Friends of Falmouth Bikeways, a nonprofit membership based
organization, is dedicated to preserving and maintaining bike routes
throughout Falmouth.  In addition to physically keeping up the Shining Sea
Bikeway with the help of the Falmouth Parks and Recreation department, the
Friends promote bicycling throughout our community. Pictured above is
Michelle (from the FBL) at a recent meeting with Bob- our organizations are
working together to promote the cycling community in Falmouth!

 The Friends of the Falmouth Bikeways just finished a project that has been
on- going for the past several months.
As you may have noticed, the Wood Lumber building next to the bike path has
often been painted with graffiti that detracts from a beautiful ride on the
Shining Sea Bikeway.  Many years ago the Shining Sea Bike Path was a
railroad route to Woods Hole, active from 1872-1965.  In the early 1970's,
Joan Kanwisher, a Woods Hole artist, conceived the idea to convert the
abandoned right of way into a bike path and enlisted help on the project
from her friend, Barbara Burwell.  This year, friends of Joan Kanwisher
wished to celebrate Joan's 90th birthday with an appropriate gift.  They
contacted the Friends of the Falmouth Bikeways to create art, that would
recall the railroad and make the bikeway a more interesting and fun place
to ride.  Members of the Friends Of Falmouth Bikeways contacted Jane Baker,
the distinguished art teacher at the Falmouth High School, and worked out a
plan to create meaningful but difficult art projects for talented senior
art students at the high school.  With funds donated by Joan
Kanwisher’s friends and the FFB, materials, paint supplies and four 4 x 8
foot smooth MRD plywood panels were purchased.  Over several months, 10
advanced art students completed the mural that was erected by members of
the Friends of Falmouth Bikeways during the last week of school, June 2015.
