The Woods Hole Folk Music Society's 45th season will open on Sunday, October 9, 2016 with a performance by the cutting-edge Welsh quintet Calan. The concert takes place at 7:30 PM in Community Hall, 68 Water Street, in Woods Hole. Doors open at 7 PM. Admission is $20 with discounts for members, seniors, youth and children. Community Hall is handicapped accessible; street parking is free after 6 PM.
The musical group Calan brings together the talents of five young professionals who play traditional Welsh music in a lively contemporary style. Known for breathing new life into old traditions, their performances feature vibrant arrangements of reels, jigs and hornpipes as well as haunting ballads and spirited Welsh step dancing.

The band features Angharad Sian Jenkins on fiddle, vocalist and step dancer Bethan Rhiannon on accordion and piano, Sam Humphreys on guitar, Alice French on harp, and Patrick Rimes on fiddle, whistle and pibgorn — a traditional Welsh reed instrument made from a wooden pipe and the horns of a bull.

Angharad Sian, daughter of poet Nigel Jenkins and harpist Delyth Jenkins, grew up playing violin while absorbing both the poetry and the musical traditions of Wales. Bethan Rhiannon, who sings in both English and Welsh, is a National Clog Dance Champion who learned from her champion father. Sam Humphreys, from Llyn Peninsula in the heart of farming country, played electronic pop and rock music before turning to Calan’s compelling mix of folk and modern styles. Alice French studied classical harp at the University of Wales; she is now developing and examining harp methods used by the Romani Gypsies of the British Isles. Patrick Rimes was junior Celtic Welsh Fiddle Champion for three consecutive years, and also plays the Welsh bagpipes.
The group started in 2005 when several band members, who had met during a Welsh-Swedish folk music exchange program, started playing in the streets of Cardiff to raise money for their university fees and quickly became a local sensation. Calan’s first performance was at a local folk festival in 2008; since then, they have played at major festivals throughout Wales, England and Scotland. In 2015 they performed at London’s famed Royal Albert Hall alongside Sting and Welsh bass-baritone Bryn Terfel. They have also performed in concert tours of Italy, Austria and Belgium, Canada and the USA.

The band has produced five critically acclaimed recordings since 2008. The most recent, Dinas , features a musical retelling of how a dragon became the symbol on the Welsh flag -- a compelling folk tale set among traditional melodies and original material. The album was shortlisted for Best Welsh language recording of 2016 by the Anglesey National Eisteddfod press.

Calan produces a unique blend of accordion, fiddle, guitar, Welsh pipes, Welsh harp, voice and the percussive sound of Welsh clogs. Its five members are known for their light-hearted stage presence and eclectic dress, as well as an interactive web site offering a tune or dance step of the month — and, for travelers to Wales, clues to hidden dragons throughout the countryside.
Gavin Martin of the Mirror wrote: "...there’s nowt as dear as folk – especially when played with the grace, daring and sheer joy this multi- instrumental five-piece bring to a winning selection of songs, reels, jigs and hornpipes.”
