Sarah McQuaid Performs in Woods Hole as Part of Coast-to-Coast Tour

The Woods Hole Folk Music Society’s 45 th season will continue on Sunday, October 23 with a concert by UK-based singer-songwriter Sarah McQuaid, as part of Ms. McQuaid’s seven-week cross-country tour of the USA. The concert takes place at 7:30 PM in Community Hall, 68 Water Street, in Woods Hole. Doors open at 7 PM. Admission is $20 with discounts for members, seniors, youth and children. Community Hall is handicapped accessible; street parking is free after 6 PM.

Sarah McQuaid is a singer-songwriter & guitarist widely known for moving easily between traditions and times – from 16th century lute songs to historic Cuban jazz, from Irish and Appalachian ballads to emotive originals and contemporary pop covers. She is also known for authoring The Irish DADGAD Guitar Book, a popular tutorial on the alternative guitar tuning which she uses exclusively.

Born in Madrid, raised in Chicago and now living in rural England, Ms. McQuaid was taught piano and guitar by her folk singing mother, and was inspired at an early age by her distant cousin, legendary singer-songwriter and storyteller Gamble Rogers. At age twelve she began touring the US and Canada with the Chicago Children’s Choir; at eighteen she went to France to study at the University of Strasbourg.

Ms. McQuaid moved to Ireland in 1994 working for the next thirteen years as a music journalist and magazine editor. Her debut album, When Two Lovers Meet , was released in 1997 and launched her solo career. The same year she moved to England, playing major festivals across the country and releasing a second album, I Won’t Go Home ’Til Morning . In contrast to the first album’s focus on Irish traditional songs and instrumentals, the second was a celebration of old-time Appalachian folk, with creative arrangements and original compositions. Two more albums followed, exploring children’s music inspired by the “Swallows and Amazons” adventure books by Arthur Ransome, and delving into a wide spectrum of personal and emotional themes in song. Her 2015 recording Walking Into White was selected as Album of the Month by the UK publication FolkWords, which went on to nominate it for Best Album from a Female Artist and Album of the Year.

Sarah McQuaid has spent the past seven years touring virtually nonstop on both sides of the Atlantic, performing at major festivals throughout the US and Europe and earning critical accolades along the way. She has been dubbed “guitar queen” for her complex and fingerpicking style, and reviewers have praised her voice both for its raw edge and intensity and for its sweetness, which Minor 7 th magazine described as “honey poured into wine.” On stage, Ms. McQuaid enjoys engaging her audience with banter and English-style repartee, as well as stories of life on the road and growing up in a family devoted to music. Reviewer Gillian Adams calls McQuaid "a captivating performer with a gorgeous voice, a superb collection of albums and a truly adventurous musical nature."
