            A Workshop for Teachers

            June 25-27





What is Traditional Ecological Knowledge and why would you want to infuse it into your classroom?



 You can incorporate ancient indigenous understanding into your curriculum to address today’s issues of sustainability. Learn directly from Wampanoag cultural education specialists. Visit places important to local and regional history that are still important today.


  *   June 25-27 (9-4 pm), plus virtual callback November 7, 6-8 pm
  *   30 PDPS- Attend all sessions, implement with your class and report back with reflection paper and virtual presentations in November.
  *   Grades and subjects targeted: 2-12, interdisciplinary, STREAMSS (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Art, Math, and Social Studies)
  *   Open to all school districts
  *   Readings: Braiding Sweetgrass (Robin Wall Kimmerer), To Speak for the Trees (Diana Beresford-Kroeger)
  *   Limited rustic lodging (bunkbeds) available in Waquoit Bay Reserve dorm. Must reserve in advance (contact joan.muller at mass.gov)

Locations: WBNERR boat house (131 Waquoit Highway, Waquoit, MA 02536), Old Indian Meeting House (410 Meetinghouse Road, Mashpee) Wampanoag Tribal Center, Mashpee Wampanoag Museum.



Planned Activities include: (final schedule TBA):

-The Big Concepts: To Speak for the Trees and Braiding Sweetgrass:  Linda Coombs (Wampanoag Historian and Museum Educator

-Engineering design and traditional ecological knowledge related to Weekuw, Muhsh8n (traditional canoe), fishing weir: Darius Coombs (Cultural Outreach Coordinator)

-Traditional foodways and connections to the bay: Kitty Hendricks (Cultural Outreach Specialist

-Traditional Wampanoag Lunches

-Three Sisters Garden, corn husk dolls

-Circle discussion on implementing ideas in classroom.

- How to choose culturally appropriate books and learning activities for your students. Critical Reading Activity group work, analyze readings- adult and children’s literature. (Linda Coombs and Kitty Hendricks) Suggestions of good resources and tools to choose resources wisely.

Sharing indigenous Knowledge in the Classroom (Brad Lopes, Native American Teacher Retention Initiative, US Dept. Of Education)

Tour of Old Indian Meeting House

Mashpee Wampanoag Indian Museum: Herring run, introduction to exhibits, time to peruse museum on own.

Tour of Tribal Center (tribal court, education area, school yurt, classrooms)

Teacher discussion: How to share with students

Final Closing Circle



November 7: Follow Up: Virtual evening session: Present about how you implemented resources in classroom. Turn in reflection paper (template will be provided).
