Sierra Club’s Cape Cod & Islands Group “Third Tuesday” Talk
“Marine Debris, Plastic Foam Collection & Pollution Prevention"
Tuesday, February 18, 7 to 8 pm
Virtual, via Zoom - https://us02web.zoom.us/j/89176128525?pwd=V2R3QS9QaEF5cXhZY2xBRm1hQXJRdz09
Laura Ludwig, director of the Marine Debris & Plastics Program at the Center for Coastal Studies (CCS) in Provincetown, is featured speaker when Sierra Cape Cod’s “3rd Tuesday Talk” series resumes February 18th at 7pm. This Zoom event is open to all, and time will be reserved for audience Q&A.
Expanded polystyrene foam is commonly used in coffee cups, packaging, and docks. Based on experiences leading beach cleanups on Cape, in Boston Harbor, and elsewhere, Laura will discuss major sources of marine debris, what happens to foam debris over time, ecological impacts, challenges in handling high volumes of recovered foam, and opportunities for artistry, education, and volunteerism. Existing and proposed policies that ban or phase out uses of expanded polystyrene foam will be highlighted, including bills introduced by the Massachusetts legislature in 2025.
At CCS, Laura Ludwig has pioneered interdisciplinary, community-based approaches to collecting and managing beach debris and end-of-life fishing gear. She directs at-sea gear removal and collection programs in collaboration with commercial fishers, leads a volunteer Beach Brigade involving year-round shoreline cleanups and debris data collection, and supplies debris to artists, makers, and crafters. Under her direction and inspiration, hundreds of tons of gear—and large volumes of expanded polystyrene foam—have been removed from marine and coastal environments and either repurposed creatively or disposed of properly.
As part of Sierra Club's Massachusetts Chapter, the Cape Cod & Islands Group represents members and supporters in Barnstable, Dukes, and Nantucket counties.
