Sierra Club's Cape Cod & Islands Group "3rd Tuesday Talk" Series

Wildfire Risk, Safety & Preparedness on the Cape & Islands

Tuesday, July 15, 7 to 8pm

Virtual, via Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/89176128525?pwd=V2R3QS9QaEF5cXhZY2xBRm1hQXJRdz09<https://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=0dc70d92e520467f089380c80af93fb34f45f314d66da52ab814691c4be76a5fdabc9fd5aaf23c707a210301eaf667df150817a820bb4dcc>

Cape Sierra's "3rd Tuesday Talk" series continues July 15th at 7pm with two expert speakers addressing wildfire risks on the Cape & Islands and fire safety and preparedness measures for property owners and communities. This Zoom event is open to all, and time will be reserved for audience Q&A and discussion.

Wildfire has helped shape local landscapes for thousands of years, creating fire-adapted ecosystems including ubiquitous pitch pine-oak forests and globally rare pine barrens. Modern development patterns and fire suppression practices - combined with ongoing climate change - position areas on Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket as increasingly vulnerable to large wildfires, which in recent history have impacted hundreds to thousands of acres.

On July 15th, speakers include:

Josh Nigro, District 1 Fire Warden for the Massachusetts Department of Conservation & Recreation, will discuss wildfire risks on the Cape and Islands relative to other areas of Massachusetts and the United States, as well as local approaches for risk mitigation including community wildfire protection plans, forest management, and controlled burning. Josh is based at Shawme Crowell State Forest in Sandwich and leads wildfire preparedness, safety, and management activities across Barnstable County, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket.

Brian Fies, author of the graphic memoir A Fire Story<https://brianfies.blogspot.com/2017/10/a-fire-story-complete.html>, will describe his experiences and learnings as a homeowner in Santa Rosa before, during, and after the Tubbs Fire in 2017, then the most destructive wildfire in California’s history. His neighborhood burned to the ground and has been rebuilt under codes, standards, and practices designed to reduce the risks of living in fire country. Brian is an award-winning writer and cartoonist whose other titles include Mom’s Cancer, Whatever Happened to the World of Tomorrow, and The Last Mechanical Monster.
