 Sierra Club Third Tuesday Talk

"Battery Storage for Greening & Reinforcing the Power Grid"
Tuesday, November 18
7:00 - 8:00pm ET
Virtual, via Zoom - https://us02web.zoom.us/j/89176128525?pwd=V2R3QS9QaEF5cXhZY2xBRm1hQXJRdz09

Sierra Club’s Cape Cod & Islands Group and Massachusetts Chapter will host a virtual talk on November 18th at 7pm featuring Nathan Raike of RENEW Northeast discussing the essential roles of large-scale battery storage in achieving the Commonwealth’s renewable energy, emission reduction, affordability, and resilience goals. This talk is free and open to all, and will include time for audience Q&A.

Large battery energy storage systems (BESS) can increase the economic and environmental value of solar and wind power by charging during periods of low electricity demand then delivering the stored renewable energy to the grid at peak periods, when prices are higher. Grid-scale BESS facilities also can help improve power quality and service reliability in localized areas. Massachusetts is incentivizing BESS deployment and operation to reduce reliance on expensive and highly polluting fossil-fueled sources of peak power, accommodate growing amounts of renewable energy, and increase resilience.

In Massachusetts, most large BESS facilities are co-located with solar arrays. Notable standalone projects include the 150-MW Cranberry Point BESS in Carver<https://cranberrypointenergystorage.com/about>, the state’s first utility-scale project; and the 25-MW Outer Cape BESS in Provincetown<https://www.eversource.com/residential/about/sustainability/renewable-generation/battery-energy-storage>, which prevents power outages and improves community resilience. Many other projects are under development—and some are facing significant opposition.

On November 18, Mr. Raike’s talk will address BESS development and deployment in Massachusetts, technology basics and benefits, fire safety and other common concerns, and opportunities for community benefit, engagement, and advocacy under the state's new siting and permitting framework.

Nathan Raike is manager of state and local affairs at RENEW Northeast<https://renew-ne.org/>, a non-profit association that brings together energy companies and environmental interest groups with shared interest in promoting and increasing renewable energy in New England. He leads advocacy and engagement, coordinating with decision-makers and stakeholders on educational, legislative, and regulatory initiatives that support renewable energy deployment, grid modernization, and environmental sustainability. Previously, he was a policy analyst at ISO New England, tracking and evaluating legislation and regulatory proceedings affecting energy markets and electrification programs; a consultant at FiscalNote, advising clients on legislative and regulatory developments; and a legislative aide and analyst at the Vermont State House, focusing on energy issues.
