Estuary Education

 Leadership Internship

The Estuary Education Leadership (EEL) Intern is designed for high school students entering their Junior or Senior year of high school who have an interest in science or nature. The intern will be mentored by Reserve staff to encourage interest in science with hands-on learning experiences as well as leadership development.



Duties and Experiences:

•    Assist with public environmental education programs and group visits.

•    Assist with growing Salt Marsh grasses.

•    Partner with Interpretive staff on Piping plover and Osprey education.

•    Take part in research opportunities.



Qualifications:

•    Entering 11th or 12th grade in the fall.

•    Demonstrates reliability, creativity, leadership and communication skills.

•    Experience and/or interest in outdoor activities, nature, science, or stewardship.

•    Preference will be given to students who live year-round on Cape Cod.



Hours and Compensation: EEL Internship is an 8-week program in July and August. Students will work two days per week (15 hours) and receive a $225 a week stipend ($1,800 total).

The Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve is one of thirty sites that make up the National Research Reserve System. The Reserve is managed and funded as a federal/state partnership between National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR). The Reserve is made up of open waters, barrier beaches, sand dunes, fresh and salt marshes, rivers, and forest. WBNERR is working to promote stewardship of coastal areas through research and education.



The Department of Conservation and Recreation manages one of the largest and most diverse state parks systems in the nation and protects and enhances natural resources and outdoor recreational opportunities throughout Massachusetts. The DCR system includes over 450,000 acres of parks, forests, water supply protection lands, beaches, lakes, ponds, playgrounds, swimming pools, golf courses, skating rinks, trails and parkways.
